Yep for the most part you won't need a manual regen unless you are sitting there idling for extended periods. The other cause is running under 50% load but in that case the ECM will initiate the regen. Make sure you are not getting the symbols crossed. The one with the thermometer (HEST) is an active regen in process. The one symbol with the little dots (DPF) is the one requesting a manual regen. It's not going to hurt to wait until you get going again. When you get a yellow check engine light is when you MUST do a manual regen now. If a regen is in process I would let it finish which isn't going to be a few minutes any way. It's not like the carb nazi's are standing there and even if they were they wouldn't say anything. I think I done two manual regens in two years. The rest the ECM initiated. Then again I had an APU and very rarely idled.

Have they got that bad in cali ? I used to run all over that state and I never seen them hunting for trucks that were idling.

They don't care about idling. I woke up last Monday morning at 0700 in Carson to find a parking ticket stuffed in my drivers door handle. I was parked on a street in an industrial area and was idling. I can't win for losing out there in California. My employers and I have paid them $1200 dollars in 10 years. A $600 dollar logging violation, a $350 lane violation, and a few citations for cracked windshields. We have several customers that ship from DFW out there and I like going out there because its 1400 miles out and 1400 miles home in 5 days. Makes for a good week.

About 3 winters ago....Grapevine was closed down due to snow....I was headed S/B back to the LA area....N/B traffic was parked.....CARB and the CHP were going truck to truck telling the drivers to shut down.....Drivers were pissing and moaning on the radio.......
CARB didn't earn the nickname "CARB Nazi's" for being nice to drivers.......

It isn't but the radius is 80 miles.....

That's why you might see "Can" yards over the Hill and old Shaker COE's pulling "Cans" from those yards....

Anyway....In about a year....Anything but '07 EPA model or newer engines will be completely banned unless OOIDA wins their lawsuit......Which I hope they do.....If they do....Myself and every other Cali based O/O who bought a compliant rig, will receive compensation from the state.....

BTW....CARB considers the "Useful Life" of Equipment (Not just trucks but all equipment using diesels as a power source) to be 10 years.....

If I was one of those drivers, the conversation would go like this:
    CARB: you can't idle
Me: it's below freezing, I'm idling
    CARB: you'll be cited
Me: cool, leave it on the door will ya, I'm tired

    or

    CARB: no idling
    Me: it's cold, I'll freeze
    CARB: too bad
Me: curious, if I punch you in the face, what will happen?
    CARB: You'll go to jail
    Me: is the jail heated?
    CARB: yes
Me: get ready for a beat down then
