My husband is an owner operator working under another company's authority and insurance. He hauls hazmat tankers, which is why he's leased on due to 5 mil insurance needed. He's got a chance to buy another truck at a good price to have as a backup for now, and eventually might put a driver in it. He'll have both trucks under the same company's authority and insurance, but we're wondering about IFTA filing. He is only intrastate in Texas, and right now, he pays the company $25 a week to file for him, but we're looking to do it ourselves. We're just confused on how that works since he's under their IFTA, as well. Any help in figuring out how to get his own IFTA while under someone else's authority? What all does he need to do to set it up, since he doesn't leave Texas. Thanks so much!

Also wanted to add that the company he is under is registered as Interstate, even though he is only Intrastate. He's been an owner operator for over a year now, but doing the exact same thing, contracted through the same company, for about 6 years now. He was a company driver, had the opportunity to buy his own truck (not a lease) and continue doing exactly what he was, just for himself and took it! Things are going well, and the company he hauls for is selling their old trucks, so he knows the truck he is looking to buy and has talked to the driver that was using it. :)

This may seem like a dumb question; if you stay within Texas for all miles, why have IFTA?

If he is staying in Texas just get Texas non apportioned tags, then there is no need for ifta.If he goes out of Texas he would have to buy a trip permit for the state or states he is traveling through,if he switches to non apportioned tags.

For 25 a week I’d let them continue to do it.

Assuming that $25 includes the cost of the taxes(which it should) id say, let them do it. Its just more paperwork for you guys.

There’s places that do all that stuff, I use a company from Little Rock, AR, just because I hate dealing with the state to get tags, it’s $150per quarter and I send them a check, they do everything paperwork wise. That way I’m either driving or working on one, not driving, mechanic and paper pusher.

Don’t need Ifta if you only stay in Tejas. You don’t need to pay taxes on fuel you will never buy out of state.

Even if he is doing drop and hook and does not pull a dedicated trailer, and even if you don’t own trailer all you need is a Combination Plate.

Charging $1,300 a year to file intrastate IFTA is highway robbery. You can easily file online yourself for free. If it’s all in the same state you are literally just entering the total miles you ran for the year. Unless the company requires they file it, I would do both myself and use that money for a vacation weekend.

But ya like is said above you don’t even need IFTA if you stay in Texas always. I ran intrastate for years and didn’t have it.

One other thing, if you decide to do it online yourself, only go to websites that end in .gov. Otherwise it’s just another company’s website that will try to charge you an arm and a leg to file it for you. Most O/O paperwork can be done online for free, but make sure it’s a government website and not a third party.
