My husband is an owner operator working under another company's authority and insurance. He hauls hazmat tankers, which is why he's leased on due to 5 mil insurance needed. He's got a chance to buy another truck at a good price to have as a backup for now, and eventually might put a driver in it. He'll have both trucks under the same company's authority and insurance, but we're wondering about IFTA filing. He is only intrastate in Texas, and right now, he pays the company $25 a week to file for him, but we're looking to do it ourselves. We're just confused on how that works since he's under their IFTA, as well. Any help in figuring out how to get his own IFTA while under someone else's authority? What all does he need to do to set it up, since he doesn't leave Texas. Thanks so much!
Also wanted to add that the company he is under is registered as Interstate, even though he is only Intrastate. He's been an owner operator for over a year now, but doing the exact same thing, contracted through the same company, for about 6 years now. He was a company driver, had the opportunity to buy his own truck (not a lease) and continue doing exactly what he was, just for himself and took it! Things are going well, and the company he hauls for is selling their old trucks, so he knows the truck he is looking to buy and has talked to the driver that was using it.
