What you could do is download the software from logbook.com and put in the times of the day before, and the day you want to fix to make sure there are no red violations.

I was actually written a ticket for violating the law of being off duty...the DOT handbook actually states that you MUST show 8 hours in the sleeper birth...the officer actually showed it to me!

If you're doing a full 10+ hours break before driving, the time off can be logged sleeper or off duty doesn't matter.
If the driver wants to use the split break provision then yes the break can be split into two periods, one period of 2 hours off duty and/or sleeper and the 8 hour portion must be all sleeper to qualify for the provision.
If you got a ticket for not having 8 hours logged in sleeper and you were on a full 10, this officer was WRONG as usual.LandslideRich Thanks this. -

Thanks for your quick response to my question, so I take it is legal to log all my off duty time on line one and that there is no legal ramifications if I do not show time in the sleeper.
Thanks again I know I appreciate all your help and advice here on this board as I am sure many others do as well
Exactly right, the only time you have to show sleeper is on a split, other than that you can log 10 as off duty all line 1 -

Ok truck driver wife here!!! So need the lamest terms available. My husband is coming home from mi and has to stop in OH he believes he can make it within 100 miles of home before he has to take a ten. Can he legally take an 8 then drive the 100 miles and shut down for his 34???

An 8 hour sleeper break will extend his 14 by 8 hours the minute it rolls over 8 hours. Depending on his position geographically and on his logs, this may or may not be helpful.

I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IT. Theres always some hotshot roadcop hiding behind the motel 6 sign that's just waiting to grab a bigrig. The 11 14 must not be exceeded, so depending on how many hours he has driven and the length of on duty time, which includes all on duty status time. If he exceeds the 11 or 14 he can not drive.Last edited: Mar 20, 2017
