Some businesses do ask 1/2 up front, but it’s 1/2 of material or parts up front. This is done to ensure they get paid, or at tge very least minimize their loss. Unlike a mechanics lean, they can’t just wonder back onto your property and take back their material.

But your point is a valid one. No employee should EVER pay a deposit to hold a job!!!

 

I had a contractor ask for material cost once, but I didn’t give him the money directly. That’s not smart. He could’ve taken off with my money.

Instead, I met him at the supplier and purchased the materials directly and had them delivered to my house. Problem solved for both of us.

 

Admit it, Frank! Had he absconded with your money, you would have bit him...

 

A contractor or sub-contractor can put a lien on your house if you don't pay. That's how it works in California. They just need to do it within 7 days of job completion.

 

? Did not know about that. Then again i’ve always paid my bills. Lol.

I know of issues in the marine repair world, and bottom line the boat can’t leave the marina until paid in full, because the marina can not go back later and repossess their parts later.

I know the local Ford dealer will make you pay 1/2 the cost of a part up front for them to order it. (Just buying parts & doing the work yourself)

 

I've heard one might report owners to collection agency. I just don't know what specific information may be needed. Maybe worth a phone call. Such debt sits on record for 7 years...one year for each grand...
