    Hi all,

I recently had my truck serviced. Expected a $3-4000 total bill for break job (drums and shoes), wheel seals, king pins and some other minor stuff.

As far as the labor goes; I did some research and it shouldn’t be more than 20-22 hours max, and that’s per the book to do the break job and everything else wheel related.
Just curious to know if I’m getting ripped off or if this is actually hot long it takes.
    Thanks!

Sorry I mean to say 20-22 hours of TOTAL labor for everything.

Looks like it. I'd estimate 18-20 hrs tops

I don’t see any unfair labor times. Sounds to me like you should have asked for a quote up front.

That’s what I was kind of estimating too! Thank you.

    It’s a mechanic I’ve used quite a while. But yes you’re 100% right, I should’ve asked.
However, when you do king pins, you need to take all the parts for a brake change off. I feel like 6 hours for king pins and 4 for a brake job is double the hours.
On top of that, 12 hours to do drive axles is a bit much?
As I said, I am asking because I never really checked on him before, but I’ve had people tell me I’m getting ripped off. That’s why I’m asking.

What’s he working with, no air tools, crescent wrench?
I’d say 30-45 minute per wheel for brakes.

It’s difficult to get a good mechanic anymore, most will try to make a fortune on one job, kinda like a used car salesmen.
Months wages per 1 car sold.

I was shocked when he charged me 3 hours for 2 stainless steel tubes for coolant that go into the engine, upper and lower. It’s 4 clamps and 2 pipes. That’s why I started looking at the entire tab.

10 hours total for king pins is fair with brakes and wheel seals.

12 for all drive brakes including all wheel seals is also very fair @ 3 hours a wheel end.

I’m not seeing the double dip end of anything.

If it was just shoes and drums, then you may have an argument.

    I just figured again.
    1.5 for each drive seal=6
    6 total for king pins
    Air compressor hose 1.5
    Coolant hoses 2
    Visor/inverter 2.5

    18 on the money
