Yeah, the problem is that so many new drivers who know absolutly nothing about the trucking business want to go out and buy trucks because they see it as some sort of status symbol or something, there is a whole lot more to it than just owning a truck. And of course these big companies try to push that lease purchase b/s which is designed to set you up to fail anyway, so of course it doesn't work out.
I got into this O/O thing very young, in my early 20's and unlike most drivers I was never really was a company driver, but I grew up in this business so I knew what i was getting into, but even still I have been having a hard time this last year, it is not easy to make it as an O/O these days, I had drivers at one time but had to let them go as the rates got so low and fuel got so high that I couldn't afford to pay them what they deserved, I have had to sell equipment, and am still trying to get rid of one truck. several years ago I was making really good money but it has really gone downhill the last year.
I know many owner operators who are struggling right now, and I know some who have lost their business and I feel bad for them all, so I hope 2010 is going to be a better year for the trucking industry,
