Sometimes people scare me with their posts here.... No offense OP. Depends what your CDL was suspended for... For instance, if your CDL was suspended for not getting a DOT physical, you could go and get a class C drivers license. But if you lost your CDL, for a DUI/DWI, excessive points ect.... Then you would not be able to get a class C. If you got your license suspended, your insurance company would frown on that, and raise your ratesfarmerjohn64, asphaltcowboy4x4, brian991219 and 2 others Thank this.

The relationship between a "regular" driver's license and a CDL depending can be a bit hard to understand. The best way to look at it is the CDL is a license on top of a "regular" driver's license. The key here can be found in 383.51. Almost all of the offenses found in that section are also going to cause a loss of ALL driving privileges NOT just the CDL. I was speaking to a friend that is a safety critter just now and he summed it up this way. If the state gets the CDL/Regular license YOU CAN NOT DRIVE ANY VEHICLE. If only the FMCSA gets your CDL absent any state actions you may operate a non-CDL vehicle.

No dude wtf? Cdl and regular license are completely different ball games unless ofcourse you got a dui or something like that dwi or something you’ll lose both but for instance if you fail a medical and lose your cdl you’ll still have your license what are your circumstances?

Failed a drug test, lost the CDL, had to reinstate my normal license - but my personal car insurance will no longer carry me.

I'm sorry to have to be blunt, but a driver does NOT lose their CDL because of a positive on a drug screen. You can keep the actual CDL, but the FMCSA has disqualified you until you go through the SAP/return to duty process. Again FOR THE RECORD, a positive on a drug screen will NOT cost you that CDL.

Ok. Now I understand. Every state has an insurance fund. It is for drivers that can't get insurance. For instance, I live Maryland and it's called MAIF. Maryland auto insurance fund. I would google it for the state that you live in. Basically it was set up so people could get insurance, so they wouldn't drive uninsured. I hope this helpsfarmerjohn64 and Mindan88 Thank this.

Okay - I lost my job - no longer wanted the CDL, so I didn’t renew or redo anything - so I switched back to my personal drivers license and now my insurance is saying they won’t cover me because my license was suspended. That’s my main question - can my insurance do that because of a separate license
