Driverless trucks, it's gonna happen. Millions of drivers will be out of work.
Yes, I saw the video with the trucks linked. -
Driverless trucks. No.
A computer would have to run the truck. Computers are programmed by humans an only as good as the programmers. But even the best programming would not anticipate all situations to make them road worthy. And then there is the security issue of hacking into the system. And let's not forget that electronic devices could also be jammed. They also would have to rely upon GPS. A solar flare storm should and would interfere with this. Nope. Everybody just keep dreaming. -
You still need drivers to get those trucks to their ultimate destination. IMO, not happening anytime soon... have you driven your "flying car" anywhere yet???
-
At least you have your priorities straight. -
Well, I for one will never use this system.
I could never follow that closely, and I don't put up with tailgaters on my rear for very long either.OldHasBeen Thanks this. -
This is not talking about taking the driver out of the truck. All they are showing here is the next step. Lots of systems us radar to apply breaks when you have the cruise control set. All this is doing is adding the accelerator to the mix. It is making something trucks do now safer. You always see trucks running close together to draft.
We do not need to worry about having our jobs replaced by robots. As long as we have newbies that will work cheap, our jobs are safe from high tech replacements. -
the new demand will be high tech repair technicians... shops will set up house on every other corner

Here's one to ponder, when Werner and Swift try this, and the driver of the first one takes a 90 degree corner too tight, and takes out a stoplight and the corner of a building, will the automated one follow him and finish off the path of destruction?
-
I agree. But it's not just Swift and Werner. They haven't cornered the market on roll-overs by a long shot.
Following 20 feet behind another truck doesn't allow you to see ANYTHING of the road ahead. There is no way to anticipate or judge turns.
If the following driver is expected to steer, the stress level will be sky high for that driver because all they can judge from is the tail end of a trailer less than 1/2 second in front of them.
