I'm Canadian, drive for a Canadian carrier and never once read anywhere that they are required by law. None of our trucks have them, and we use the flashers and a toot-toot of the air horn to signal backing up if it's at a reasonable time in a work zone/area.

Beep beep beep beep. It’s the LAW.

First time I put my truck in reverse I actually looked around for the truck in the vicinity that was backing up.

I’m pretty sure that on const sites in CA it’s a CalOSHA law. Dump truck brokers won’t hire you if you don’t have one.

I think some people need to learn the difference between law and policy.

CA MVC section 27000 concerning backup alarms was amended Sept. ‘11. Originally only garbage, refuse, and roll off trucks were required by law to have backup alarms. Amended to include all construction vehicles over 14,000 GVW.

1st thing I did when I bought my truck was snip the hot wire to the back-up alarm, splice in a wire up to a switch in the cab, and back to the back-up alarm. With the switch turned on, the alarm works. With the switch off, it doesn't.okiedokie Thanks this.
