I'm new to trucker but I do know how to down shift. I drive a 07 international and when I'm down shifting from 6-5 (high to low) it makes a loud grinding noise for about 2-3 seconds when I hit the flipper down. It doesn't do it all the time but it has been doing it more and more. Any tips would be awesome

Search PedigreeBullDog"s post on this subject. I thank everyone else explained what the problems may be and he explained how to drive it.
Tyler Jennum Thanks this. -
Either you aren't pre-selecting your range shift (flipping the switch) before moving your stick or your transmission is worn. Generally if your splitter is grinding from high to low, your range syncro's are worn out (or going bad since it does it intermittently, I am betting it does is more when you are braking harder than usual) The only syncro's in a big truck trans are in the range box and are usually worn out if the previous driver didn't flip the switch before moving the shifter on a regular basis.
Eaton/Fuller had one of those info-posters you see in repair shops years ago about the very same problem. They were seeing a lot of bad wear in the range boxes of 9 and straight 10 speed transmissions and were refusing warranty on gearboxes they could prove weren't shifted as directed.Last edited: Jun 12, 2015
