Self insured companies like Swith and other large outfits make the decision. A lot of smaller companies (that can’t self insure) get forced into installing them by their carriers. I know Great West pushes them hard.

Exactly right. Our insurance carrier offered us a discount if we'd install driver-facing cameras. We went to forward facing dash cameras last year but driver-facing cameras just isn't going to happen.
We didn't figure the discount was worth having the drivers feeling like we didn't trust them. We don't want to set up a work atmosphere where the driver is afraid of the office all the time.
We're careful who we hire and if an unsafe driver slips through we'll find out about him quick enough.
Our safety record is good. Actually, it's excellent. That's because of our drivers. That should be the only thing that matters..

Been just fine for many years without a creepy little camera looking at me
So i really don't need any help from the company when it comes to taking care of my MVR.
I probably wouldn't mind the outward facing cameras to help out if needed
But I'm not willing to give up my constitutional right to privacy or any other constitutional rights as an American to ANY entity or organization

I agree that it is unlikely that the companies who control these systems would appreciate their employees scanning video to observe drivers. Unfortunately, we live in a society where publicly demeaning strangers can be profitable. Take for example peopleofwalmart.com. Is it possible that screenshots of the ugliest, fattest, most distracted, deepest-finger-up-nose, etc. driver could appear on a site? Of course it is. They could call it disgustingtrucker.com. Even if not for profit, it's disconcerting to think that among their fellow employees, we could become subjects of observation and mockery.

As to your point about cameras in public places...yes, they are everywhere. But there are things which all people do in their own "private" space which they would not do in public. If I have an itchy boob, I don't reach my hand up or down my shirt on a fuel island.

Not to be ridiculously paranoid, but do we really know that they aren't selling info about all of us? Seriously...everyone else is...the difference is these people have a camera pointed at us 24/7.

    Just creepy.

This is what my company does. We are allowed to tape them. Problem drivers have to uncover them, then again they usually dont stick around long enough to get the chance to. We are a small outfit though.

So hypothetical situation...I wake up, flop down in the driver's seat in underwear and tank top to smoke. I jostle the curtains on the driver's side to lower the window (so far, this happens every morning, btw). If the cam is over the passenger door, or under the curtains and uncovered, either way I'm being recorded.

Presumably, no one will ever see that video, but suppose a driver backing in behind me taps my trailer. How many people get to see my bed-head, cellulite, and belly fat, before it's determined I wasn't at fault?

Yea I could see doing that running those drivers off pretty quick. This is simply just a privacy issue for.OTR drivers. It's not the same if your in a daycab with a driver facing camera. Someone above said ita no different than being watched by a camera when your pumping gas at the fuel pump..your not living in the fuel island!

What if ...you liked to sleep naked and your fat hairy butt was hanging out of the covers ? This camera thing is embarrassing , invasive , and whose to identify whose butt was in the sleeper birth ?

The company I work has them installed, after a while you don't even know their even there. Ours though do not record all the time they are only action motivated so if the sensors detect you're falling asleep first it will activate your seat which is designed to vibrate and a weird alarm will go off if one was feeling sleepy after that thing activates your well and truly wide awake. They will from time to time randomly activate as well however you know their working as a either a green or red light will light up under the camera i usually just make all kinds of funny faces to give those viewing it on the other end something to laugh about.

Just think, the generation which will eat Tide Pods, or take the Birdbox challenge while driving just to be on video will be the newbie drivers hired when Beacon drivers start quitting.
