always been a company driver so I really never paid attention to truck specs. I run coast to coast reefer usually at 70,000 lbs.
Plan on buying a new truck before I retire.
Can I get advice on (engine, horsepower and gears) for what you would go. A good balance for fuel and hills getting 8mpg average.
Best options: help pleas

New Volvo’s and cascadias get exactly what you’re looking for.
But they come with a price tag. -
Most trucks are bunched in a particular company spec.
I dunno about the 8 miles to gallon. 6.5 to 7 maybe. -

How fast do you anticipate running down the highway ?
How much money you have in reserves?
Technically any engine at all will pull just fine.
Personally I’ve always stuck with Freightliner or WesternStar. They always stood by the warranty, got me in and out in a reasonable amount of time, and their facilities are everywhere.QuietStorm Thanks this. -

2019 Peterbilt 579, 450 Cummins, 12 speed auto (which I hate). Had the truck for 5 months almost. 60000 miles. Run Vegas to NM and back. Loaded heavy eastbound and come back super light. We are governed at 68. My average mpg is 7.59 for the past 4 weeks. I idle the truck to sleep if it’s hot. I don’t own this truck but I have had no problems with it (yet) and should I go nuts and decide to buy another truck I’d consider this set up. I previously owned a new Volvo pulling reefer 48 states. When something goes wrong you’re going to be looking for a Volvo dealer to fix it. If it was me I’d stick with Freightliner, KW or Pete and Cummins or Detroit power. Just so much easier to get warranty work done.
