For now anyway, you can order a truck with a manual transmission. The last conversation with the freightliner dealer was that it would be a $3800.00 option charge, plus the cost over what a base transmission would be. Not sure I fully followed that logic.

But you have to admit that fiberglass hood on the old W900a looks pretty good with a Seminole paint job and a chrome swan sitting on top

Yeah how many loggers would want to trust their lives to a computer controlled transmission when they're coming down a 20% grade on ice grossed out at 63,500 kgs?MACK E-6, Texasgordo, Sons Hero and 8 others Thank this.

With only 400hp you might not make it to the top so ya might be backing down that 20%grade.

Not that I agree with it, but the theory behind it is that a automatic knows better when to shift than a driver to get the most efficiency out of the engine.D.Tibbitt Thanks this.

After driving several different manufacturers AMTs, I can definitely say that the theory is definitely proof that engineers don't design these pieces of equipment for real world operation. I have yet to drive one that shifts smoother and to the right gear as often as experienced drivers do out of habit. They might be better for less experienced drivers, but there isn't that much difference for us old farts, it's just easier on our old left leg when in today's endless traffic jams.
