Actually, they can give you a "fix-it" ticket if they ask to see that you have them and you don't at any scale in Colorado, I've seen it happen at Limon a couple of times, generally though they will give you a verbal warning.

And yet, they happen all the time, and on roads where you never expect to need them

I have NEVER been in a situation where it was a surprise to need chains... guess I just look and think ahead.

Storms that cause the chain law to be issued...you will always have the one or two idiots with an empty box or flat that thinks the chain law is a suggestion...rest assured the two idiots will jacknife and tangle each other up, shutting the road down for at least a day so everyone else can pack the ice good while they sit behind them all day long.

That is one reason I am told why Wyoming has been just shutting I80 down when it gets bad enough...nobody knows how to drive anymore or when to quit.

...in other news in Wyoming, the wind stopped blowing for a few hours one day...and all the locals fell down because they forgot how to walk...

I did it during our one and only lone snowstorm that we got in November...I thought I was going to be lazy and do just the outer tires on a drive axle in the parking lot, ended up digging myself deeper in 3 or 4 inches of icy slush and had to get pushed out.

never been surprised to need chains, and for customer docks, a little rock salt from the side box got me out. It is all about being prepared.

I was taught by my grandpa, that chains are only to get you out of trouble, not into it, and I have lived by that mantra.
