I got stuck at a low bridge in Brooklyn (Ave U and East 16th St, for those familiar with the area). Had a 12'6", but due to construction on the underside of the bridge it was about 8" lower. Had to back out with the help of a few NYPD officers, hang a left down East 16th, around the block onto 17th, and back up Ocean Ave to Foster.
On my way around the block, there was a car illegally parked at the end of East 16th, and my tailswing took off his mirror and hooked the front fender. Couldn't have avoided it, the street is very narrow with cars parked both sides. The officer ahead of me looked at me, looked at the car, shrugged, and waved me off. Never looked back. Never got cited. Don't care what happened.

Officer should have called towing to come get that car.Maybe then that driver would have learned. But after him seeing a new look to his car he might of learned, lolJPenn Thanks this.

You don't go over the car, you scooch it to the side and rub it. The guys that are good at (which is kinda scary) just bump their tires and slip thru.
I've seen it 1st hand. Like I say, shook me up but then you see these city trucks and it makes sense. Either way, I watched it with my own 2 eyes -
Dragging trailers over parked cars in NYC is one of the best stories at the lunch counter in the Pro Drivers Only seating. You would think after all these eons of drivers claiming to have done it there would be some picture/video evidence lol.
OK yes I called the cops for help a few times.
Clutch went out in Albuquerque and limped the truck all the way to California for delivery. Couldn't stop in gear, truck would stall out. Couldn't get it into gear unless truck was shut off. Came off the freeway onto an incline offramp and was hoping to time it just right to roll through the stop sign at the top but traffic wasn't cooperating. Get to the top and shut truck off in low gear. Traffic cleared but load was too heavy for starter get the truck moving again and burned up starter right there dead in the water blocking everyone coming off the freeway. Called 9-1-1 and they send CHP who got me a local tow truck to move me off 300 yards for $300 bucks.
Another time with the largest truckload carrier, i pick up a hazmat load. I bobtailed to the load from direction A and tried to leave the same way because direction B had a scale. Long story short the tandems went into the ditch because the levee road didn't have enough real estate for me to swing out wide enough. Call 9-1-1 again, figure my trucking career is over now, hazmat in the ditch blocking the whole levee road etc. $500 tow truck comes out and picked up trailer from ditch and planted it back on terra ferma and cops say have a nice day, carrier never found out about it.Khalid, Toomanybikes, Lepton1 and 2 others Thank this. -
Wait, you mean you tried to buttonhook the turn by the book and ended up putting your trailer in the ditch? But but but THAT'S not supposed to happen in the real world!spyder7723, RedRover, Toomanybikes and 2 others Thank this.

I thought I could get out of it because I have this secret granny gear. But once the full weight of the corner of the trailer was pressed down on the drives, she wasn't moving.Lepton1 Thanks this.

Being both a full time Officer and part time O/O I have helped many drivers and also refused others all depends how you ask. Example if you lock your keys in your truck don't walk up to several Officers eating dinner and say " any of you dumb ##### got a tool to unlock my truck" . No we are ######### and would not be smart enough to use such things. I have given directions had drivers follow me to their location even backed their trucks out of area they should not have been in ( that was just to make my life easier) . It's all in how you approach things.
Toomanybikes, misterG, Lepton1 and 1 other person Thank this. -
I hated to not get to enjoy an actual mealLepton1 Thanks this.

I am the lucky guy, Been an Officer 25 years And all the people I have worked with say I am a nut magnet. There could be 5 of us I'll be the only one eating and someone comes up asking the stupidest things just to me. Or people think it is just ok to come on over and just set down at your table and uninvited like your long lost friends and start up a conversation. Any of that bring back memoriesLepton1 Thanks this.
