I know what you're saying but we still have basic decent privacy without a tearless retina in our faces. Also, none of what you've mentioned above applies to me. If you don't care about your privacy then more power to you but many of us do care and do what's necessary to hold onto to basic freedoms while we still can. Do you have curtains on your windows?

The sad reality that I am seeing with these companies that have cameras, is they are usually the highest paying companies, at least in my area.
One such company had an ad on indeed. Local flatbed work, paid $30-ish per hour. Not top pay, but they're close enough that it could've worked. Looked pretty good on the surface. They have good equipment, they pay well, have great benefits. And they also have driver facing cameras.

So I called them, thinking I could get past the constant surveillance, learn to live with it. We went back and forth about my work history and driving record. Guy says I'm a perfect fit. Asks if I have any questions, to which I started asking about the cameras. He gives me the standard sales pitch- they're actually beneficial to the driver, we've had cases where the drivers was absolved of any guilt, yadda yadda. If you're not doing anything wrong ya got nothing to worry about....

Then I asked about using my phone, not while driving, but when at customer's and such, and how my kids get hold of me if there's an emergency at home. He then tells me they have an app that they require you to download on your phone which basically jams the phone from working while you're in, or around your truck. If there's an emergency at home, home is to call the office, who then will message the truck, and allow you to call home.
At that point I'd heard enough, and thanked the guy for wasting my time.
They still call two years later....

Western express had some really strange language in their contract. Specifically about recording the eyes. Most people wouldn’t know that’s a major issue. There’s a reason NASA has been spending millions of dollars annually for years on studying eye movement. There’s a reason cops do DUI tests so strictly on the eyes. Basically the consent western express demanded was allowing specifically the recording of and saving of recordings, for the eyes. Special consent on top of being recorded. Go ahead, go down the rabbit hole. The eyes can literally predict everything about a persons health. Keep going down the rabbit hole, the eyes could predict much more. I wore glasses every time I was in a western express truck.

There’s also a lot of lawyers who would argue that driver facing cameras are just plain illegal. I would agree with them.

This is crazy.... I don't even take pictures or videos of myself and companies think I would be ok with them doing it, crazy!!

Maybe Millis? I know Heartland Express doesn’t and has been a parent company of Millis for years

Evidently they’re 6 months required now, but no driver facing camera, at least, as long as you have no accidents. IMG_1663.png

They said the driver chooses for the driver facing camera. Why would anyone choose to be watched like that? In my last accident is was a slam dunk in my favor with the forward facing camera. My company cleared me an hour after the accident and I had a different truck the next day. But with a driver facing camera, what if I had looked the wrong way or taken a sip from a drink or any number of things that might alter that outcome? And the investigation would have sent me home, probably for weeks, and by God knows what means, until they figured it all out.

Home time you can count on is said by everyone.

3 weeks vacation. Is that after the first year, or over time as it builds up?
What? Newbies get everything from the start? Maybe they do at Millis, I'm just asking.

Extra pay based on weekly performance is even worse than what my company has now, which is worse than what they had for nearly the first decade I worked for them.
At first it was a 3 month average. Then it went to monthly with a lot more rules, so the bonus was never as much - by a long shot.
Weekly? You might see a small bonus 1 or 2 weeks per month. But those home time dates really hose it for the other 2 weeks.

Per Diem is better for the company most times. Sometimes it is also good for the driver under certain circumstances, but only up to a point.
Per Diem is non-taxable income, so it does not show up as actual income. That can be bad when trying to get a loan, or anything else that asks about your income. If you get hurt on the job and are relying on workers comp to pay you, it is based on the taxable income, not per diem added to that income. Per diem does not count as income for Social Security either, since you don't pay SS taxes on it.

Detention pay after 90 minutes of on-time deliveries? That makes no sense at all, and the person that wrote that sentence should be either coached or fired.

I’m not a recruiter nor have any affiliation with Millis lol. It was just one that came to mind that used to take newbies. Only reason they came to mind is cause in 2021, Heartland had no cameras at all (outward or inward facing). I wasn’t sure how much policy translated to Millis. But, if it’s anything like when I worked at GP Transco, the optional camera probably pays a few more cpm to have it on. I am not a driver facing camera person unless it’s a day cab or the pay is exceptionally higher, but to each their own.

But on a side note, I always heard pretty good things about Millis and have always had pretty good interactions on the road with their drivers. It wouldn’t surprise me if the 3 weeks vacation was true and the bonuses were worthwhile. On the other hand, Heartland was a terrible experience for general OTR, so that’s probably not a great sign lmao

Don’t have any experience with them to advocate for or against though
