    Yes.

8 hours off duty gives you a fresh work shift.

The key to understanding the difference between US and Canada rules is knowing the difference between a work shift and a day.

The limits for both are the same.

You have a 16 hour window, in that 16 hours you can drive 13 and work 14.

Say you like to run late and stop at 4 am for your 8 hour break after driving from midnight until 4. At 12 noon you now a fresh shift to work with. That means you can drive 13 hours in that shift. However, since you already have 4 hours of driving during the 'day' you only have 9 hours available to drive before midnight.

I don't think that is correct @tinytim Say you did 2 hour break from 9pm to 11pm and drove until 4 am and then slept til 12 noon. Your new shift starts at 12 noon. You would not be required to stop as soon as you got 9 more driving hours in between 12 and midnight.

Your new shift starts at noon but your day still started at midnight (unless your log runs at a different 24 hour period) and you have already driven 4 of the 13 hours you can drive in the day.

That's where the deferral comes in if you wanted to get into that.

Plus the definition of a day (from the HOS link):
day, in respect of a driver, means a 24-hour period that begins at the hour designated by the motor carrier for the duration of the driver’s cycle.
So, typically midnight for most drivers.

Learn something new every day. Thanks.
I have broken that law many times in years gone by. Guess I was lucky enough to not get inspected at the same time. It does make sense, makes it possible to differentiate day 1 day 2 for off duty deferral.

    tinytim and not4hire Thank this.

I think that scenario is the reason the deferral was put in there.

They decided 8 hours is enough rest for a new shift and realized shift limits would conflict with daily limits.

I used to think the deferral would let you exceed shift limits, the safety guy wasn't impressed. :)

Reading about people argue how log book laws are in either country or even your own is good entertainment lol. It makes it sound like driving a truck is right below aerospace engineering!

Well freaking government nade it that way. All we had to do is drive and take nap when we felt tired but too many ######## started wrecking and government stepped in to "save the day". It works out every time, just look how well Obamacare worked out...

Oh, I very much agree. The days of loose leaf are coming to an end. That's why you see a shiny dump truck in my profile pic and not a highway rig ten four
