I got paid more as a company driver on any load that crossed the border. The only time I had actual problems was when the Canadian side had issues with their computer system and no loads could clear going north. But they sent out a mass email notifying all carriers as such, so I just held up about 30 from the border where I could park and have access to food and such. Got an email from my office once they were notified everything was back online, camped out the remaining 4 hours to finish my 10, and headed for Edmonton. Other than something like that happening any issues that come up have nothing to do with the system in place to cross the border.

I like the old timers who refuse to go to Canada because one time back in the 90’s they had to wait a long time at the border for their load to clear. You tell them it’s not like that now and their head spins.

Use to be you could hit the Canadian border, if your paperwork wasn’t in order you could then go to a broker close by and have it all fixed.
Now it has to be pre-cleared before you arrive. You can go online and check your PARS number to see that it has been approved.
If anyone arrives and it hasn’t been approved, they’ll turn you back.
I use to drive into the USA , but in recent years I find I make more money driving regional. Not that there isn’t money going into the states, just the Canadian carriers don’t pay enough to justify the time away from home.

To the op, file against the brokers bond for compensation for the work you did, never work for free,

Also never ever leave a shipper without going through the process, you can state an estimated arrival time to get clearance.

Canada is easy to get into, hard to get out of thanks to our custom service.

If the freight is on or in your possession, you don’t let if leave until you have been paid & that payment has cleared the bank!!

I got held up at the border because paperwork wasn't in order. It was only for 8 hrs and I was able to get in a 10 in that little holding pen beside the border checkpoints at the peace bridge. I did get pulled into a bay and my sleeper searched after I was cleared though. I guess they wanted to give me the cherry on top.

Another of our company drivers was held up for nearly 3 days though.

Shipper's fault, Canada's fault, broker's fault?. Who knows and after the second day sitting, does it really even matter?.

How we did it was once we were loaded the paperwork was sent to the commodity broker before we left the shipper. That would give them a head start as we headed toward the border. The more you do it the smoother it will go for you.

Had he made sure his PARS was in order then it wouldn’t be an issue.
I’d rather run Canada than the US any day. The 4 wheelers have more courtesy than Americans, except Toronto...

The company that I worked for had multiple Canada shipments weekly if not daily. The trailer was actually preloaded a couple days before I picked it up. The claim was that the broker missed a step or didn't cross a t or something.

The point was that even experienced export carriers can hit a stumbling block and it's the driver that gets hung out to dry. Because of this some drivers intentionally left their passports at home so they wouldnt be left holding someone else's screw up.

I still went, but dreaded every time I was sent there.

as a general rule, we don’t load the truck until the PARS has cleared. You can clear loads 7 days ahead, IIRC, there’s no reason to play guessing games. Even crossing weekly with the same load to the same customer, the Customs Broker figures out how to screw up about every other month.
