Thanks again for such thorough responses. I will and (currently) am looking up local companies as we speak.

LTL is an option it I can find a position.

2-3 years in If I can break 50K, that would be great. In a year when I made $22,000 gross, I was able to save $7,000. In a year when I made 37,000, I saved right around $20,000. I'm a frugal dude and I invest like Buffet lol. So I'm pretty comfortable making in the 50K range, knowing that I can save enough to earn meaningful returns going forward.

OK.Sounds like you've got cash management under control.
Look into the prospective companies top pay rates.
LTL will gross you 50-90k after 2-3 years. Many tanker operations will put you in that range too.

Just finished applications at both Navajo and PTL if only to get conversations started about where I stand... from the horses mouth lol. Jesus 50-90K sounds great, where I live, I could buy a house in the best neighborhoods in cash inside four years with that kind of money... Though I'd more than likely parlay those earnings into smaller and cheaper apartment buildings lol.. and live in one :p

So yeah.. Atleast my initial inquiry wasn't met with... YOU HAVE NO CHANCE!

    A spark has been lit.

My kinda guy. 10 years, some Rich Dad, Poor Dad techniques, and a small empire arises.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Check out the company sub forums on those two companies and see what you think. Remember - lots of grains of salt . . . .

I appreciate the OP's honesty and not trying to gloss over the bumps in life he has run over. That's refreshing on the forum where it sometimes takes 30 posts to drag the entire situation out of a potential driver!

Well I done went and did it now! lol...

Thursday, I called the school (Community college) to "inquire" about the CDL training.. Low and behold, the class starts (started) Monday (today).. So if I was going to attend, I needed to obligate myself by the end of the business day on last Thursday... and have $4K paid at the school. It was a troubling uncertainty, but the timing couldn't have been more perfect. Plus, because It is through the college, and I'm paying out of pocket, I'll get an Obama tax credit of $2,500 come tax time for the 4K out of pocket for educational expenses... So...

I had my first class today, and should have a $4K piece of plastic in my pocket either Oct 31st or November 3rd. First day of training and the recruiters are already in the door trying to get you to apply.. hmm

I'm not sure if I should be revising an older thread or starting a new one for my next question... but here goes..

I know people typically "cut their teeth" with some of the self-insured, larger fleets... Is that the only option? Is there a place where someone could find a 1 vs 1 "mentor" type owner operator? Specifically, and I would call myself spoiled if I found this solution, I would like to find someone who operates under their own authority or has depth in the industry if you know what I'm saying. In contrast, I'm not looking for someone who's had a CDL for 18 months and is now a driver trainer for an "experience mill" type of company.

Thanks in advance, your replies thus far have been fantastic!

When I was 28 I smoked, drank and used fowl language for no reason. My current job gives me a reason. :)

I know that is of little help with your question, but I wanted to get that out there. The others know a lot more about crimes and getting hired alot better than me, so I am going to say they are correct. BUT that reoccurring 'stolen property' situation would be very bad if it happened on the job, so know what is going on in your vehicle.

Good luck and keep us posted how things work out.

You still around here Carl12? I'd really be interested in talking to you about this. I should be licensed the first week of November and team driving is definitely what I intend to do starting out while learning the rope of FlatBed.
