Hi, ive been out of truck since 2009-18 months experience. Looking to go back to school but do not have the cash to front it as theyre pretty high. I applied for the WIOA grant yesterday, are they hard to get? I heard they are. One school said they have a refresher course for 1000 cash. Would that be a good option for me to do with how long ive been out? Thinking it would limit my choices for employers as some require a full course after that long out of the truck. Also does company sponsored training still exist? Thats what i did when i first came into the industry. A refresher course, get on with a company, get experience then jump ship?
    Thanks, Falcon86a

Which state do you live in?
You can knock on some doors of small companies around your area or go with a larger company that has refresher/cdl training.
Some want you to have driven within the last 5 years for refresher and with over 5 yrs. out of the seat some will want more extensive training. Evidently you qualify for the WIOA Grant or they wouldn't have let you apply. That's the best deal if you can wait it out.
Try these in the meantime if you want:
Freymiller - has "Restore Program " ie. refresher
    Paschall Truck Lines
    Transport America
    Western Express
    Carolina Logistics

Have you surrendered your CDL since 2009? If you still have it you should only have to go out with a trainer. I don't fully understand your situation.

Before you spend money on school, decide where you want to work and then do what's necessary to get hired there. It will cut down on future posts complaining Company A said they just needed me to X but Company B wants be to go do Y.

If you don't feel capable to drive without more training, then all you need is a company that trains. A trainer is going to teach you like a school would, by taking steps. If you lost your CDL, but have 18 months experience, just pay the $200 or whatever to go take the test, and if you fail, take it again. I'm sure it would only take a couple attempts if you've had 18 months of driving before, problem solved, that doesn't cost much. If you think you can drive just fine and don't need training or schooling, then there are plenty of small companies here aND there that will put you in a seat, but make sure you are fully confident if you go that route. If you have 18 months experience there are plenty of better options than paying 3k or more on school. Grant or no grant, don't waste my taxes.

most companies require recent experience due to the insurance companies that cover carriers. could be some that will put you with a trainer without truck school but none that ive seen

Thanks for the help. I submitted application for WOIA and the woman told me to submit in writing why im not able to get a job as a commercial truck driver. Think im gonna say ive been out of the industry for too long and carriers wont hire you if you dont have recent experience/graduated from a truck driving school per their insurance. She may say thats not my problem though, cuz there probly is .1 percent chance there would be someone that could hire me. What would you put?
