You don't "charge" for tolls, chains, etc. It's all rolled into the bill. How an O/O decides to break out his charges is his own business, and I doubt there's a broker anywhere that cares either way how the money is "allocated". The only thing that matters to either side is: "Does the final number work for both of us?"

We all know that cpm is the biggest scam in trucking. And when I was with Melton, we had tarp pay to help compensate us for the time we put in with the manual labor. Is it the same with chaining? Right now, my company has not mentioned it. So, I want to make sure I am not getting screwed on this.

I'd highly recommend practicing chaining up. And no you won't get paid extra

So do you do it differently than me? If you have to chain up, do you call the broker and request a new rate con, or is it "rolled in" to the original quote? Honest question.

With the LTL’s you typically get paid for just about everything.

I’m not saying it has to be a substantial amount.

Old Dominion pays a flat fee per day to chain. It used to be $25. Didn’t matter if you did it once or you did it four times a day.

SAIA pays 0.75 hrs to chain each time. Only catch is you have to call Central and wait on hold for 20 minutes to get the dispatchers to put it on your pay. Linehaul drivers have a cpm for driving. An hourly rate for drop/hook and chaining and training/safety pay.

If all the drivers would stand up for themselves as a whole, we wouldnt be getting nickeled and dimed by some of these ####### companies the way we do.

Any manner of work whether it be fueling, chaining or unchaining, drop & hook, tarping, untarping, washing the truck even your pre-trip and post-trips should be paid. A couple $ here and there adds up at the end of the year AND it makes a driver feel appreciated by their company.

The more you drivers let these companies get away with, the more they will take from you.

First off most of the mega’s will not pay you to chain. I started Werner and they didn’t pay you to chain. They expected it. I parked it when it came time to chain. Especially at $0.26 cpm. You want me to work, you will pay me or I will sit.

Secondly, all the big LTL’s will pay you to chain.

FedEx Freight
Estes
Saia
Yellow
ABF
T-Force (The old UPS Freight)

these guys all pay.

I’m not sure about R+L or Reddaway.

FedEx Ground, most contractors will not pay you to chain because they’re too cheap but they aren’t a real LTL/Linehaul company anyhow. They are a package company.

Interestingly, the people here that seem to be against paying for accessorials or extra labor are people that have their own business. Don't mind Catmando. He's been sniffing cow patties for the last 20 years and it's affecting his way of thinking.

Yeah, I'm a sissy. I made #87 out of 1378 drivers at Melton Truck Lines. Flatbedding. I don't think the likes of you has enough hair on his nutz to top that. You wish you had sissies like me working for you! But hey, we're just having fun here. I see your little minion Catmando likes your post though. When are you two getting married?

Owner Op and I don't disagree with you. Maybe not in the same way you are explaining but no time should be free. Should be a min and max pay per day agreed to before hiring. It just needs to be fair for both sides to work.

Let’s say we are, you have to throw chains let’s say,, 20 times in a season (I’m being generous) and the rest of the time you’re running your average miles. You are making up for all that “lost time” chaining ten fold. In other words, it all comes out in the wash.

When I was a driver we got paid well, had weekends off at home, got to run nice equipment and were married to our trailers, had a real nice environment around the shop and office, and was allowed to take up to 6 weeks off per year before we were asked to pay the insurance on the truck sitting and not working. That entire package made me feel fairly compensated and never once did I question if I should be getting paid to chain.

Now that I live in NE and have my own truck I can play the other side of the coin if I wanted to. Trucks not willing to run the NW in the winter means those of us that will can usually ask for more money and get it. But I’ve also been parked since the end of October and haven’t been out playing in the snow this year.

Back to your original question, what do you feel is a fair rate for chain pay? What would you be happy with and feel like you’re fairly compensated for your time? That amount will be different for everyone and no matter what the amount is people won’t be happy. If I were at my old job and “in practice” and fast I would be happy with $15. That’s over $1 per minute for me to be outside and could be an extra $30-45 on top of my tarp pay and mileage pay every day at my old job. Would you be happy with $15?

I wasn't really thinking about what would be fair or not. I was just wondering if people got extra pay or not. At Melton I got $40 to tarp. Other places pay up to $100.
