Anyone know some inexpensive insurance companies, particularly for new companies/drivers that covers CA? Just trying to get bare minimum to get my MC...

You’re probably going to be stuck with Progressive as a new entrant. Maybe give GEICO a call maybe they can get you insured they seem to play by their own rules.

Get your quotes first and wait until the fmcsa tells you to provide the COI. It’ll save you some money. It takes a few weeks from the time you receive your MC number to actually becoming active.

Good luck on the inexpensive part :)

Another note about your comment “bare minimum”

The minimum is like 750k for liability but it’s useless. Every broker that I have dealt with requires 1 million.

:laughing-guffaw:,:laughing2:, :evil3:, I'm sorry, you picked THE absolute most controversial subject. Insurance, more than any other thing, comes up most often. You simply can't win. Insurance costs have skyrocketed, and no end in sight. Insurance is and always has been, a necessary evil and I don't think one is any better than the last. Cheap insurance doesn't exist, many big companies self insure themselves, as they can't pay the premiums. Some have gone so far as to charge a new driver a deposit, unheard of in my time. I don't mean to make fun, but insurance ironically will help to be the death of this great country. Those disaster scenes we see all too often nowadays, will homes reduced to toothpicks, or the mega pileups with seemingly no consequence, and we haven't begun to assess the Cal. fires yet,,,well, we're all going to pay a lot more. Good luck.

First get a quote because you may change your mind about having your own authority.

When you apply for your MC authority they will give you your numbers right away..soon as you pay the application fee $400ish been awhile, lol.

Unfortunately if you do everything required timely..submit BOC-3 etc there’s still a waiting period that can take upwards of 5 weeks. Some say they got there’s sooner but plan on 5-6 weeks sitting in limbo.
Once that waiting period ends they will ask you for your COI. There’s no need to get it sooner because you will just be throwing a month or more premiums away. Once you submit the COl they will activate your numbers in a day or two and then you can go trucking.

Don’t hesitate to call them, from my experience they were all very friendly and informative. It was during one of my calls that they told me to save my money and get the insurance when they tell me.

If I had to guess I imagine CA is like Florida for new entrant insurance so expect quotes in the $30-35k range. Of course that can go sideways depending on your truck/trailer value and the commodities you plan to haul.
