I just ordered a new 29 as mine (about 3-5 years old) crapped out. Anyway, what’s with the AM/FM? What does that have to do with the CB?

In September 2021, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved the use of FM mode alongside AM mode and single-sideband (SSB) modes on citizens band (CB) radios.
I have yet to hear one word transmitted on FM. I think truckers prefer AM for the same reason AM is still used in aviation, ie because a stronger FM signal completely supresses a weaker signal. It's called the capture effect. With AM you receive both. That could become important for an aircraft in troubleFlat Earth Trucker and Frank Speak Thank this. -
####, are they making that cheap, only 3/4 years ? I had a 29 GTL back in 1989 and lasted me about 25 years and ended trading it for a Galaxy 44. But I was using Galaxy “Pluto” at the time.Flat Earth Trucker and Numb Thank this.

I kid you not, I’ve bought two in the last 7-8 years. They’re cheap, however ($100 or so), and I usually get them by using credit card points from Amazon.
I run them on a Francis Fire Stick 3 or 4 foot (whichever I can get) and tune them to the antenna per the instructions.
So yeah, pretty much cheap made in China crap anymore, I reckon.Flat Earth Trucker, cuzzin it and Diesel Dave Thank this. -
Too bad you bought another cobra 29.
I've mentioned a few times on this forum that the cobra 29 radios are basically throw away radios. The SWR function is pretty much worthless because they are very inaccurate. The biggest problem I've found with these radios is cold solder joints. I've even seen the front faceplate start to fall off because they only put about 4-5 drops of glue on it. For about the same money, I like the Uniden PC78LTX. Basically same features as the 29, but far more reliable.

I’ll keep that in mind when I need one again.Flat Earth Trucker Thanks this.

Sounds good. Not sure what's wrong with your cobra, but if it doesn't receive or transmit, chances are great that it's a cold solder joint. You can use the eraser on a pencil and gently push down on different spots of the PC board, and if the radio comes back to life, then you found the bad solder joint. Just FYI.High Stepper Thanks this.
