I let it sit for 2 or 3 rainy days. I fired it up and it knocked about 6 times. Also a sinificant amount of decrease in mpg.
Could these 2 be related?

mainly the cause is either carbon buildup, valve, worn-out bearing piston slap, and worn-out engine parts. There are probably more, but these are well-known causes.

Not sure about your particular engine but generally that’s a sign of injector problems and I have heard some injector knocks that you would think were metal parts hitting they sounded that bad

No smoke just 4 or 5 knocks then stopped. Hasn't happened again.
