What a great picture. I wonder if it was that specific drivers handy work that left that nasty crease in that sleeper? If So I bet he learned a lesson. Also I'm also wondering if his bunk is crooked or lopsided now? Serious question...sort of.
NavigatorWife and Lepton1 Thank this. -
One at each end at an angle less than 45 degrees -- per the regs.
Here's the myth that will be busted: The people that wrote the regs aren't stupid. There's a reason they wrote it that way.NavigatorWife Thanks this. -
Not enough chains?
Highway Sailor, lynchy, Lepton1 and 3 others Thank this. -
Depends on the coils and the racks. Even on a, say, 10,000 pound coil, there can be variations in the size. So, it depends on how deeply it sits in the coil rack compared to it's size. But I would probably go with the chains out at an angle. For my money, that's the better securement, unless it's a pretty small coil in a rack with really good sized timbers.

Coils should be secured from the center out. Chains pulling straight down. Keep the coil in the rack and it’s not going anywhere.

I pulled a utility for two years straight. That’s about the only brand my company buys in standard flat and steps. I have NEVER seen anything like this stamped anywhere.Bud A. Thanks this.

See, I'm perfectly happy with that securement. The size of those timbers, the size of those coils, they would have to roll nearly straight up to go anywhere. I like that securement. It just isn't how the regulations tell you to do it.

On the top of the deck at the edge by the rubrail right above the middle marker light on the ones I pulled. I quit that job or I'd post a picture for you.
-
Actually it is exactly how the regulations tell you to do it.
