Hi guys. 12 year driver here and had been owner while leased onto a company for 4 years. Coming back on the road after 1 year off and honestly I don’t find any decent paying companies in southern cal nor am I wanting to pay 12% or more to lease to a company for mediocre service. We all know the tight margins in trucking as it is and when giving away 12% of the cream off the top just for dispatch and the right to use their DOT, trucking gets a lot harder.
So I’m sincerely looking into biting the bullet stop procrastinating and just getting my own DOT. I know how to use load boards and have done negotiations in the past and am well aware of the other costs and permits etc.
My question is for those who are current owner ops, how much insurance am I looking to pay more or less with my own dry van or reefer trailer these days? Thank you

Liability only for me, but I'm under 10k$ a year. First year was around 13k$ for truck and flatbed.
I assume reefer would have more expensive cargo coverage.
BTW, 12% May not be bad if they have their own freight. There's hardly any of that "cream" working off load boards, and what is there is even harder for a new guy to find.Oxbow, Knight_Rider and D.Tibbitt Thank this. -
Location is a big factor for your rate. Being in So-Cal if you get it for less than $20k you’ll be doing good.

Just FYI @Knight_Rider, KITT won’t be there to help you. Consider all other carriers Garth!!!!!

I live a little east of you in southern az. My first year in 2022 was around 1500 a month with minimum insurance... Also keep in mind the southwest is one of the worst freight markets in the country to try and work.. the rates are and always will be dog #### down here.

12% is a good rate. You can't complain about that.
The bigger outfits that most lease on to charge 30ish %.
Course. The actual pay is what really matters.Knight_Rider and D.Tibbitt Thank this. -
Depends on what they do for the 12%
May be worth it. Ins. Discount. Paperwork. Billing. EtcKnight_Rider and D.Tibbitt Thank this. -
Another thing to consider with getting new numbers is that brokers don’t like to work with new guys on the load board. Probably be difficult even getting loads.

for 12% they offer factoring, running u der their authority, insurance liability and cargo for around 300 a week, and they keep permits and ifta in order. Also they find the loads and some are ones they know others off boards. I’d be responsible for my own truck of course and trailer and repairs and fuel etc

Yeah I know man that’s why I was seriously considering doing reefer because the drive van blows out of here can get really ugly and often times the money is staying between the Midwest and the south and the east not much going up and down to five and if there is anything good those hills pretty much kill your truck and your fuel costs.D.Tibbitt Thanks this.
