I’m asking this out of ignorance because we have a business need. We have a small farm in Northeast GA and need flatbed full loads (hay) and flatbed LTL (liquid totes and various pallets) from ID, MO, TX, etc. from time to time.

The producers of these products are small outfits and either put the responsibility for transport completely on the buyer or offer pretty poor rates.

Outside of using a broker is there some way to get in direct contact with O/O’s to offer those loads? The load boards don’t really seem to be set up for it AFAIK (not a shipper, no MC, doesnt make sense to pay a monthly fee). Does posting on the classifieds at TTR make any sense?

I have no axe to grind with brokers, but don’t see the need for a middle man if the idea is to build a business relationship over time with a carrier.

Been looking at this site for quite a while. This is my first post, so flame away…

Might get lucky on the listing on here. Also might get lucky on Craigslist posting as well depending on if anyone looks at them anymore. You will need to do more posting on here as well to be able to send someone a PM. Also when you post that the broker offers pretty poor rates that is not a good thing to bring up for an owner operator that you might want to work with. He is not gonna work cheaper than the brokers are but will keep the middle man out.

If it was me I would try and find out whom in the area is an owner operator and contact them for the business.

Theres several trucking companies around the area that might help you out if you called them.

What is your definition of “poor rates”?

Thanks for the suggestions. I didn’t mean to come across as trying to low ball. That’s not really the intent at all since it needs to work for everybody.

Truthfully I wish we had a truck and I could make those runs but that aint happening any time soon, if ever.

I did not figure you was trying to insult anyone, just pointing out the words don't go well with owner ops. Ha Ha Wish you luck as it can be done pretty easy if your rate is decent for someone to do it.

run a search for Owner Op’s or small trucking companies in your area and then solicit them for a bid.

you’ll need to be a little more specific than “from time to time”. Let them send you bids & go from there. If any aren’t interested, ask them if they know of anybody in the are who might be.

As an owner op, i have gained a lot of work from customers who approached me, either because they saw my truck around town or because they called another local owner op who told them he couldn’t help right now but to call me as i may have interest in the job.

You are in a desirable area for a flatbed to bring freight to. It should be easy to arrange for fright coming from Missouri and Texas, not sure about ID, one would need to be sure he has that load before even going there.

Yeah, that might have been a poor choice of words.

Typically these producers will plug rates into Fedex retail and pass along the quote. Sometimes it makes sense a lot of times it doesnt. Last quote I got from Idaho was 5x the cost of the tote. I just got a quote today from a hay farm that wanted $6/mi to move 252 miles down the interstate (40k lbs, no overwidth, etc).

Thank you. We’ve dug around a little but need to look harder. Found lots and lots of dry van around here.
