Just had a new mx13 long block installed
long story short
The shop used the original hoses etc
And one of the radiator hoses got a pretty good leak in it
I had to use about 4 gallons of tap water to get me to where I could get off tye road and change it out
then put a new reservoir tank on and added about 4 gallons of fresh coolant
that said
I’m not concerned with the freeze temp level as it should be pretty close to the level of protection it was before this
But
Is there any concern in the tap water and interior damage or should I flush the system?
Coolant and water question ??

Probably depends on the minerals in the water.

Because it is cheap insurance I would dumb the old and put in the new. Not much money to do so considering you just put new block in. No reason to take a chance.

that and put new hoses on.
There is a couple reasons that you’re supposed to use coolant with distilled water and not tapwater, Seems pretty shortsighted to me to save $30 on coolant and have bubbles beat a hole through your cylinder wall. -
Depends if you used 100% antifreeze or the 50/50 mix. Which is more commonly sold.
The 100 would get you there. The 50 would still leave you on the weak side.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Why would the shop used old hoses, always go with new, they should know better.
GYPSY65 and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
Industry standard is to use distilled water if you’re adding or mixing with concentrated antifreeze. Adding well water is probably the worst possibility due to the high iron/metal content. The short term effects when added to coolant are very minimal. You most likely added premix ELC which wouldn’t have increased the freeze point much after adding 1/3 of the system capacity with straight water. The only way to know is to test it. We flush systems with well or tap water every day, but always drain completely and fill with new coolant.
Play it safe and dump it. Fill it with new premix.
If the engine was replaced under warranty it is hard to get all new hoses covered. Needless to say they could have let you know they were in bad shape and given you the option to replace.
This was a warrant long block right?GYPSY65, Siinman, 062 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Get something like Final Charge. that already has additives needed to fight electrolysis/corrosion, anti foaming agents to fight cavitation, It’s pricey, shop around. Concentrate is available. It’s on line or usually special order at some of the auto parts stores. If money’s a concern. I’d get 6 gallons, and 6 gallons of distilled for a 10 gallon system. Mix 50/50. Premix what’s left leftover for topping off. Might save about $100.

The S60 has green coolant in it, I asked my mechanic about swapping it out, he was 50/50 on the idea, so I kept the green. It is arguably easier to find.GYPSY65, Oxbow, Siinman and 1 other person Thank this.
