Is calculating miles ran by "as the crow flies" pretty standard. Any advantages or disadvantages to this calculation? Or just standard practice? I've seen zip to zip and dock to dock but wasn't sure what most companies do. Thanks

Never heard of anyone doing it that way. Would sure cut your paid miles significantly. I would not run for someone that did that. Usually companies will be either zip to zip, some will be what is called practical miles which is usually fairly close to what you actually do but not quite. Rarely a company will pay hub miles which is actually what you drive. Then, some pay by percentage of whatever the load pays.

Big time rip off. Worse than HHMG miles.

    Good replies so far.
Personally, I've never heard of a company calculating mileage as the crow flies. That's insane. Waaaayy shorting you on miles.

Yeah, I couldn't see this making any sense but saw it in a job offer. Was just wondering if anyone else had. I appreciate the replies.

I'd be alright with it as long as I didn't have to carry anything more than would fit in my pockets.

Side note: NEVER EVER agree to fly alongside a crow. I learned that the hard way. That critter jabbered on all the way from Shreveport to Vicksburg!

Practical miles is what our company uses for CPM. That basically means the route with the shortest miles on Google maps Even if it takes longer to run it. We are free to choose our own route though

    tscottme Thanks this.
