I wonder if he ducked when he hit. I know I would. Sort of like covering your head in the hallway in 4th grade practicing how to survive when they drop a nuclear bomb near the school. I had the best spot for protection under the water bubbler.

Believe that the KW totally underestimated the speed of truck he hit
Poor piece of driving by the KW and lucky he wasn't killed with his coil letting loose
On top of a bad bit of driving this drivers load securement proved to be insufficienttsavory Thanks this. -
Bbye pretty Kenworth
drvrtech77 and daf105paccar Thank this. -
No excuse, but the dry van that got rear ended was going Super Slow.
KillingTime and tinytim Thank this. -
What a waste, only thing I can think of he had a medical problem or was into heavy texting and just not paying attention.

First thing I noticed is the van pulled off of the shoulder into the right lane causing everyone to have to go around. Too many drivers hit the shoulder and stop to read messages coming across their silly computers from dispatch only to run the risk of this sort of thing happening to them when they pull back into traffic...must be something the megas teach, because they all seem to do it. The driver of the van may actually get a ticket for obstructing traffic (traveling below the minimum speed limit) in this case, because he wasn't even CLOSE to being up to speed when the crash occurred.
That does not excuse the driver of the KW, though. Sure, he may not have realized how slow the van was traveling, but at SOME point (prior to the instant before you smash into the other vehicle) you ought to realize you are closing rather rapidly upon them. He'll likely be cited for failure to reduce speed.
Even the dash cam guy probably could bear some of the blame for reducing speed when he jumped out into the hammer lane. There was no reason for it, and if he's in a governed truck incapable of doing the speed limit, the KW may have been about to overtake him when he jumped out there causing the KW to move to the right.
Again, not excusing the KW's lack of attention, just stating how in these sorts of situations it is usually a series of events leading up to a catastrophe, and several players made decisions which in some way played a role in causing the eventual outcome.Lepton1, Getsinyourblood and tinytim Thank this. -
I think they were both to blame. One driving too slow and the other hitting him. Not sure if anyone else saw it but the rubber marks from skidding don't show up until after he hits??? Can't figure that one out.
DonM and lovesthedrive Thank this. -
I think he was probably looking in his rearview mirror to see if he passed the truck in the left lane and didn't realize the truck ahead of him was going as slow as it was? He was really lucky that coil didn't hit his cab though.

If you're pulled over on the side of the road, you better be legitimately broke down. Now a little trick I use very rarely is to pull off the offramp and come back up the onramp side and park on the side but there is a full lane of space away from live traffic.
Lepton1 and Diesel Dave Thank this. -
I wonder where the engine is at, in the cab perhaps.....also, good thing he had a step deck trailer, ......that save his life. If that coil would of been on a regular flat......not even a headboard would of save him with that impact.
Lepton1 Thanks this.
