He's a surge driver for them. Surge means excess loads that the DC drivers can not handle. He is not assigned to the dedicated fleet so he makes what he would doing OTR. He use's his OTR truck assigned by his home terminal, not the DC, so he can take it home. The drivers that are driving the DC company trucks have to leave them at the DC. He's not special, just using the rules to his advantage, and I don't blame him. His DL doesn't mind, one less driver that he/she has to worry about. If you like the work, long term surge is a good gig.

oh ok, do you just have to ask the DL's about surge work then? and does it also require so many months driving before they will do it or any company driver?

I go both ways on the team subject, when I was with a mentor I hated not having privacy or enough space, while solo it just seems a little more boring at times. If I didnt have a baby at home I would take my wife along with me for a week or 2 at a time.

Oh cool I never knew what that term ment. So I'm guessing I'm a surge driver? Because costco has their own trucks but I'd say 90% of my loads are to and from there.

That's how it works, you get a special invite buy virtue of being in the DC's spiderweb, in other words they see

    A. you're empty within about 100 or so miles of them
    B. they need extra trucks to help out with loads
    C. you have a decent enough on time and safety record

They send you a very cheery message asking how are you doing, would you like to come over and run some (insert big box store name here) loads for us? You'll think you died and gone to heaven, the atmosphere is totally different. Planners have desks right out in the open, total open door policy, treat drivers like gold.

I did it for a short time out of Grandview WA but had to go hometime and never got back in their spiderweb area or they didn't need surge drivers anymore.

I love the way rhey treat u its n ice compared to otr and incourage u to call in if u need to and I rarely stay at truck stops unless on a backhual and a nice average paychecks

You don't know what I'd do for a dedicated account close to home for my man. OTR is gone to long for me.
