Internationals are crap no matter what transmission. I love the Volvo I shift but I love the room of my freight shaker as well as cooling/heating the bunk while driving and the actual temp gauge.

I'm not really convinced this is true.

I'm contemplating a day cab job at the moment, I interviewed etc.,, they told me they're 50/50 auto and ten speed, and going back to ten speed because of repair costs. About 300 trucks, all volvos. It's a shame cuz it's an ideal job for an i-shift.

I'm thinking maybe it works for megas that hire new drivers, because the cost of replacing clutches/trannies from new drivers out-paces the cost of maintaining the auto-shifts. Also, over the road, prolly not nearly as much wear and tear on an auto-shift vs local driving.

How do you know why they buy autos? I mean there are a lot of financial reason why it would make sense today when technology has come a long way and integration with the entire truck makes more sense to have one than not to have one.

We always have had people who can't back up, or safely go down a driveway, let alone a grade.

also I was surprised on how much more room the auto's had as well.

Yeah I agree, I drive chip truck daycabs and we swap trucks all the time, some are 10 speed manual, others Eaton 10 speed auto-shift with a clutch pedal, some are Allison turbo hydros and some have the new Mack M-Drive (like a Volvo I-Drive).

So pushing in a clutch and moving a shifter means that someone will be able to back better? Or do anything better behind the wheel? It doesn't even make sense.

It's not a transmission issue, its a training issue. 2 trainers for 50 students on a backing range and a week and a half to learn a half dozen maneuvers. A week (theoretically) to learn how to drive in traffic. Then off to take your test.

Then you draw the short straw and get a mentor who doesn't give a #### and only wants those team miles. It is a recipe for disaster.

My experience with Swift wasn't that bad, but it is for some people.

About the only automated transmission I would care to drive hasn't hit the US the last I heard. Volvo has a dual clutch transmission over in Europe, shifts gears like a super-car. We're talking milliseconds...faster than most car automatics
