Montana it is 26k. I don't want to get a prepass! There is only one scale that I cross regularly that is open 90% of the time and that is Billings. Other than that is is roadside or jump scales for me.

I believe the only time you can bobtail past one is if your not running under DOT numbers and have the not for hire sticker or sign on each side.

When I ran under the farm truck exemption, I still had to cross scales and ports-of-entry.

Hmmm, what about these guys buying tractors for their RV's? Outside of the farm exemptions?

But isn't a farm truck still registered as a commercial vehicle? The farm truck use tag would just allow you to use "red" (farm) diesel, correct?

A tractor that is bought to pull an RV is registered as an RV, correct? And therefore, does not classify as a commercial vehicle. So, not subject to DOT rules and regs.

Bought 18 empty apple bins for my folks farm, was hauling them on a 1 ton Chevy flatbed. Got pulled over by a WSP for blowing by the EB Tokio coops. Told him I didn’t want to look like an idiot, and about the time he was looking at my registration and CDL I could hear the scale-master giving him a bad time on his little walkie talkie, he "let me off on a warning" lol.
In Washington State, bob tails have to stop in, if/no pre-pass green light

An RV - so long as it isn't operated on a for-hire basis or by a hired driver - is a private use vehicle. A farm vehicle is not. The exemptions which exist for exempt vehicles (e.g., military vehicles, emergency vehicles, farm vehicles, RVs) only pertain to the requirement for the operator to hold a CDL.... it makes no exemption to vehicles operating under the farm exemption from having to cross scales or being subjected to roadside inspections.

A farm truck is kind of a quasi-commercial vehicle. Farm tags do not allow the use of non-taxable off-highway diesel as highway use fuel under any circumstances.

Well, subject to DOT regs (e.g., FMVSS119 regs for hydraulic brake systems, FMVSS121 regs for air brake systems, etc.), they just don't fall under the jurisdiction of the FMCSA.

Michigan is a screwed up state, we have three or four definitions for commercial vehicle, it starts at over 26k but ends up at 5k gvw. This state requires DOT numbers on every commercial vehicle other than taxis and other livery vehicles. I know people using their cars for construction with dot numbers on them, so if they are requires to scale, it would be an interesting conversation.

Our state all trucks are supposed to scale with no exceptions - this comes from MSP Carrier Enforcement.

I can't remember what state I was in, but I remember it didn't have pre pass so everyone had to exit. But then it had a bypass lane with a sign that said, bobtail trucks and empty flat bed trailers use by pass lane.

but to the OP. Yes. Exit onto the scale.

That is funny! Oklahoma doesn't target commercial vehicles as a revenue source and the scale masters are generally good ol boys, for now. Most are older and I am thinking they are retired state troopers. The southbound I-35 scale when entering from Kansas is another story though. It resembles a California coop and is always staffed with over zealous rookies and is used as a training facility. This means these old guys are going to be replaced with a new generation and we all know how that is going to end....."driver, pull around back and enter bay 5...."
