Yes
Get a good phone it is a tax write off.
Chances are your company has a corporate account saving you around 20% at larger companies.
Ask.
Flying j sells prepaid minutes plans @ the counter....the staff doesn't know they do ....but they do when you ask and they tap in the pos.
Lg unlimited is the way to go that route. -

First put your location in your profile.
A cell phone is unfortunately becoming more a necessity. Qualcomm is not a phone. The poster was joking. Qualcomm is also becoming outdated. Smart phone apps like Big Road Logbooks are the next thing coming. Cell phones are 100% tax deductible so if you are in the 33% tax bracket Uncle Sam pays 1/3 of your bill by way of a refund. Of course if you take the standard deduction, that doesn't apply.
When you pull into a company to unload, they will want your sell phone to call you when the dock is available. You will want your cell phone to take pictures of any scratches or accidents you have. Sending the insurance companies photographs helps them get you help quicker. Scan apps let you scan and send your bills to get you paid faster. All in all, get a regular cell phone. Remember if you do not have the money to get a cell phone all you have to do is apply for the Obama Phones.

I started out in trucking when there were no cell phones and no internet. I only had my map and C.B. radio. Lets just say you'll save yourself a lot of hassle by having the cell.

I know that nobody would every think of this but I've seriously thought about putting ONSTAR in my truck, although I'm not sure it would pan out, so I've put it on the back burner for now. Of course not every facet of Onstar can be used as it's integrated into a rear view mirror but you can use it as a hands free phone, no problem and is good for emergencies. My missus has it in her GMC Denali and swears by it. It can be integrated with her navigation equipment.
And Onstar can go in any vehicle now not just a GM vehicle. It's food for thought. I always wonder if they would be smart enough to introduce a commercial vehicle version.
I think QComm could do something on those lines too. They have so many layers of services, and with the technology as it is, I'm sure a cellphone feature could be introduced if it hasn't already. You could surf the net with it, I'm sure for extra $$$. Satellite communications at its finest. -
A cell phone is an invaluable tool for an otr driver these days. Outside of personal use, I use mine to call dispatch when I can't wait 30 minutes for an answer, calling a customer for directions when dispatch doesn't have them, calling a customer to see if I can show up early or if they have overnight parking, checking in on brokered loads. Many shippers ask for a cell number to let you know when they have a door open or when your paperwork is ready .. This is just the normal ones I use it for regularly. This job would be a lot more tedious without a cell phone imo.

I didn't have one in 2004 when I started until I had enough cash.
Maybe 3 months without one.
Handy, sure. Necessary - no.
My wife and I shared one until 2 years ago.
Call me cheap - if you want. I'll show you debt . . . oh that's right, there isn't any anymore. -
used to spend $100 a month on pre-paid for my Iphone(2007-2009) and it was worth every penny
