Got a brief question.. I just turned 21 and I am in a IDK what to do situation.. I just recently received a job offer to work as a inbound dock worker for Old domain.. and they are telling me after 6 months of working I can apply to the dock to driver program which would be my main goal.. but I’m scared I could be possibly be wasting my time if I take that opportunity and not go to a 4 week cdl school even though In both situations I will be testing for unrestricted license.. definitely down to here many opinions, on what route is more worth it .. goal is to be a P&D driver on either route i take .. and I’m based out of Tennessee..

Unless you wanna go otr I'd say Old Dominion. And even if you decide you dont like OD or city work. You walk away with a cdl and experience. If you do like working for OD you are 21 and got yourself set up with one of the top LTL carriers in the country. And a job that you can retire from.

Weigh out the cost of schools vs. what that program offers.

Also factor in the job after, you would have one waiting for you after you finished either program but you will have some time served if you stay with the current one.

If the current company has comparable pay to what you would make at another place, why not get your CLD for free and keep what seniority you have accumulated thus far so you can get better routes.

    #### appreciate the fast response..
my main goal after I get my cdl to stay a P&D city driver..
I’m just in the situation where if I do take the position I won’t be going to the 4 week cdl and didn’t know if that’s a good or bad thing..
    but appreciate the opinion..

Never thought about seniority with in the company.. and your right about jobs after cdl school nothing guarantee and the offer I did get for a p&d driver straight out of school pays less then the actual dock postion at old dominion ..
    Thanks for the response

You won’t have any pay while you are in the 4 weeks of CDL school….
If it was me, I would go with Old Dominion.

100% right maybe I’m just in a rush for the simple fact of saying I have a cdl .. when reality it’s more about building a career to contribute to your family..
    thanks for your thoughts

We teamed at ODFL for 7-8 years. It's a great company to work for. Get in on the 401k ASAP.

Well if your wanting P&D after you get your CDL, you would already have a job if you went with OD vs having to go look for one plus OD is a good company
