Dollar General to curb logistics costs by expanding private truck fleet

Seeing more and more DG tractors I figured they were headed towards as much in house as possible.

 

And that's the thing.

How hard would it be to design these places to allow easy access for the trucks they depend on?

 

I've got a friend who worked the Schneider side of it for a short time, and he absolutely hated it and swears that the money isn't good enough for the effort you have to go through to unload. Especially if a manager decides to be unhelpful.

 

This is precisely why a certain class is fine with flooding the United States with illegals. They want to find people sufficiently desperate to fill these jobs.

 

It seems like a truck driver, instead of making sport of another and betting that he will mess up, would walk across the street and help the guy.

But, I guess we all forget that we were also once a tyro desperate to make a buck and start a career.

Most of the Dollar General stores except some of the new stores that I pass regularly are set up terrible. It is a blind side back to the delivery door with cars and pedestrians. I assume many of the Mega Drivers on the accounts are fairly new and this would be a difficult task for a rookie. While many of us can blind side fairly easy late in our careers, I personally couldn’t 34 years ago. I don’t envy or belittle the rookie who has to do this to feed his family.

 

Most of them I've seen aren't built from scratch. They take over an existing building and inherit all the access problems along with it. From what I've seen making things easy for deliveries isn't real high on their list.

 

You'll have to ask the tire shop guys about that. They told me that they tried that a couple of times and were met either with a language/communication problem or hostility.
Hence treating it as a form of entertainment.

Yup and many of those places they try to get their delivery at the crack of dawn. When drove for 7up/Snapple, there was a DG downtown in Nashville. It was a 6am firm appt or else those drinks got rolled to the next day. Some places are using the pup trailers now
