That's optional. But some enjoy it. ;-)

Mostt do not use a real machine, typically they move from one side of the room to the other, and whisper a number or something close, kind of how they check perferial vision. I passed the vision a couple of years ago with cataract's now have perfect 20/20 vision after surgery, but before theres no way I should have passed. Dont sweat the small stuff, typically not a big deal.

    I understand.

I try to explain by saying that the table top devices while... adequate in a pinch are not very good. If you want sound of whatever kind in perfect quality to whomever you are testing it has to be a sound proof. If it is properly constructed there is a disassociation when they seal the hatch with you in it for a moment. The environment in there is such that the silence is not only absolute but if you are allowed to wait a few minutes you will begin to understand just how much noise your own body is producing. If you are in a room with absolute quiet. Audiologists tend to move things along nicely and you are not allowed to dwell on that issue.

Johns Hopkins had such a room. Not only sound proof but also base isolated from the living building around. If you are in a city tower made of steel beams full of floors and activity to a deaf person you can feel through your skin sitting down or standing up through the floor just how active the building is. But the good room in there is a nice place of quiet. And for a deaf person that can be very close to heaven. The alternative to that quiet if needed in life would be a swimming pool of a olymic size with enough volume fluid in it to isolate the world and its noises etc. Counslers know that sometimes we sneak off to use it in the night to decompress and they check up on it.

With that said, not all offices are willing to spend the money on such a room.

I used to use the same doctor, but he died last year from a heart attack last year.
She was recommended, though I doubt very seriously that I ever go see her again.

Companies, or company provided "doctors" can be more strict or extensive than DOT regs.
