I would like to think there is a more concrete way of measuring a knife. But, there are still some old laws out there that haven't been updated in decades. Someone with huge hands could haul around a machete and some little petite gal would be breaking the law with a pocket knife. Doesn't seem right.

First time I ever went to Canadia, the customs dude asked of I had any weapons. I said I may or may not have my 6" hunting knife, I just don't remember where it might be. He said that kind of knife is no problem. The kicker- some shippers and receivers have policies that say no knives, and some will search your truck. Just be aware....
Erik Blazer Thanks this. -

As far as I know.... 4" is the max legal blade length.
Who knows? A fillet knife is longer than that and they won't take you to jail over it.
NY State and NJ are the places to avoid ... even with a screwdriver. -
You're going to get all sorts of bad information asking that here. In fact you already have.
Laws tell you what you can not do. If someone tells you "it can't be longer then your middle finger" etc ask them to cite a source. I bet you they cant. Then states like California don't have state preemption on knife laws which means what is allowed is up to each city and county.
Good luck. -
Just say a knife is a tool, but I carry mine on my waist. I guess in the public eye a knife on your waist is a weapon and a knife in ur toolbox is a tool
enicolasy, HorseShoe and Erik Blazer Thank this. -
I just carry a box cutter. Always make sure I have a fresh blade in it.
