I wouldnt let the CDL go completely... I would go into the DMV and self certify that you dont need the med card as you no longer driver interstate. This will allow you to keep your CDL for intrastate purposes and puts a "K" restriction (intrastate only) on your license. If you ever decide to drive interstate again all that is required is to get a new med card and take it into the DMV to have the restriction removed.

I thought even intrastate over 10k# had to have a health card? Maybe that's changed, or was incorrect.
I know the Van Buren weigh station would write up guys for it from time to time.Oxbow and broke down plumber Thank this. -
You are correct. But self certifying "Excepted Intrastate" will let you keep the CDL. You just can't do any driving that's not listed as Excepted. Like driving for a volunteer fire department is okay.hotrod1653, Oxbow, broke down plumber and 2 others Thank this.

I did this a few years ago. Just let it go. Tejas sent me a new non cdl license in mail within the year. Fine by me. All my stuff is old enough to be registered as antique or falls under ag exempt so no cdl required. Less stress and more freedom seems like to me anyway.Oxbow and broke down plumber Thank this.

I wouldn't let your CDL go if I were you. Way too much hassle to replace it if you ever wanted to in the future.
When I take a break from driving I always choose Excepted Interstate. You can choose Intrastate if you want as well as long as it's Excepted.
It's easy to self certify. I just email the form to my state and forget about the medical requirements until it's time to certify again or I start using the CDL again .. whichever comes first.tscottme, kemosabi49 and Grumppy Thank this. -
Guys that drive commercial company pick ups need a medical. The dot number is on the pickups.

I am almost positive they changed all the rules on this recently.
So if you think you might have a need for it in the future I would go and see about self certification.
Otherwise you might have to pay for training to get it back later. -
I got it sorted. Thanks!
tscottme Thanks this.
