Where the hell could these death machines run?? Think about it, wouldn't they need their own roads more or less?
I personally do not think human drivers would become obsolete. The auto rigs would be suited for the Western US, with more open space, but only up to the Mississippi River. It's ridiculous, absurd, and so utterly unsafe. Driverless cars are stupid IMHO, now 80000 lbs and up in the mix!!

As I've said driverless cars will never be popular because they would run the speed limit and that's too slow for everyone nowadays. And the robot would end up sulking in the backseat as soccer mom flies down the highway 25mph over the speed limit

They can refuel jets in mid flight... They load our trucks by robot....
It will be a slow transition...but it's happening. We will be fine... But our kids better look elsewhere for a job.....

I doubt the job will go away. The 2 major players in the self-drive market in the US now have accidents on their records. In both cases they believe the accidents would have been avoided had someone been attentive at the wheel. The will always need someone with experience behind the wheel, there will always be circumstances the technology was not programmed to account for, and they will always need someone there for malfunctions.

As long as Hacker Hack, Drivers will Drive.

That is unless the Robots learn to vote and then they will take over the world.

Remember trains ride on rails and they crash or derail every day. Your jobs are safe. Teachers are obsolete and have been for years. Computers can teach kids anything that teachers do but we have to have jobs for the economy to work.

I think some dispatchers think we are already robots.

More or less I think they would. Driverless cars are one thing, but you're not going to see cars driving around by themselves with nobody behind the wheel...that would be ridiculous since cars only exist in the first place to move people around (Unless you could send it to Wal-Mart to do your shopping for you...)

these driverless trucks that are supposed to go out there and seamlessly interact with the motoring public on our highway system in its current state is some technocrat and bean counter's fantasy. These things would need dedicated space to operate in and even then it would be a nightmare to administrate.
