Do you suggest a driver keep their own drivers log in addition to whatever the company is requiring the driver complete as the drivers log? I would think a driver might want a hard copy record of all your drive time for your own personal and professional uses.

Also, what are some of the better, best methods of keeping a driver log today. I still use pencil and paper for a lot of things but know my way around an iPhone and iPad as well.

    Cheers!

Depends on how your company works and depends on if your talking about HOS logs or a "record of trips log". As far as individual trips, paid miles, stops, reimbursements, dates, etc, you are probably required to submit a "trip sheet" to the company on final that includes all this. I recommend you somehow keep a copy of this same data to reconcile your pay stubs to make sure you are being paid and reimbursed for everything. No need to be redundant and write down data twice. We use transflow, then I will turn in the originals (they want these when arrive back at terminal) AFTER I have reconciled them with my pay stubs.

As far as HOS logs, if on paper, yes, keep the books copy for up to 3 years in event of audit (and you claim standard meal allowance, and if on eLogs, you should ask the company to print to paper or PDF your logs monthly and get them to you BEFORE they delete the data. Few drivers get audited and need to prove their claims with log books but it can happen.

AS long as they match there is not a problem. you can copy information down as many times as you wish. 2 copy's even of both are handwritten are fine, it does not constitute a double logging.

I keep a copy of all my logs. You are required to have the last 7 available, should anything happens to he elog, you have to be able to produce the last 7. As long as your compnay can still send them your alight.

I keep a daily journal thaat has everything entered or written in it. The tme entery here also match the logbook.

We use loadtrek elogs. I can log on from a computer and print out logs for my records. If you're running paper logs you should have a copy with you anyways. I don't see a problem double logging as long as they both match. When they don't match is when you'll have problems with the dot man.

In the past I've been asked by DOT to show them my log book. When I hand it them them I've been asked "now let me see your other one". Haha

I would not keep a separate personal log book.... you can get your e logs sent to you... I get my e logs emailed to me weekly so I have a record...

When I was in training we were required to keep a log book for a week or two so that we k ew how to do paper logs for when the qualcomm went down... you were supposed to take a black marker and write "Training Only" on the cover...
When I was with my first trainer.. we got pulled into the scalehouse for a level 1... during the level 1 the DOT officer saw the log books.. anyway.. we had not wrote for training only on them and it caused a hoopla with DOT.. we had to explain that I was in training and keeping a mock log book for training purposes.. she was filling one out now and again when she was showing a student something.... anyway. It cause so e fuss and tne DOT officer did finally let it and us go.. but said he could give us a ticket if he wanted to...

So... no I do not keep a second log book for myself in the truck... I do always have an empty log book incase qualcomm goes down... like last week my qualcomm was not working in my truck so I had to use the paper logs... but as soon as the seven day pass I will turn them in and onlh have a blank book with me again...

For my qualcomm logs, I have them emailed to an mail account I set up just for that... so I have a ice record of all my e logs...
