What positives or negatives would this design have? This is from the Volvo VHD line I think. I'm finding it intriguing. While not present, I imagine a sliding 5th would be required to make it useful for much other than a dump.

Use to have dual steers with single axle on rear in Japan. Allowed full weights with it. Very maneuverable, in tight spaces.

I see these a lot in Canada, especially on the big rotator wreckers and on the big straight truck dump trucks, cement mixers and dumpster haulers.

Cranes whether knuckle or stick are the only things pulling trailers with those, mainly body jobs for the chassis

I feel it is time now to allow these.

Might as well as dual em both axles. Or as a compromise There are oversize concrete mixer type singles (NOT super singles) If its a 10 foot spread might as well allow 40K up front. With two axles in the drives total of 75K just about Should do it.

Tare would probably be 30,000 minus 75K leaves 45K, just enough room to put up a 53 foot dane reefer trailer loaded. Trailer can carry a set of tag axles or a canadian three foot spread tridem over a total of just under 10 feet itself. Call it 55K capacity, plus dual steer axle tractor with two tandem drives OR should i dare say three drive axles.

You can carry three tanks or even 4 with enough fuel to pick any pump with the cheapest quality anyone in the USA and fuel there one time all week.

The rear steer axle may be powered to provide more options Should things get a little bit off step on ice or what have you . Lord knows there is plenty of trucks that get stuck.

I'll have to settle the Motor Carrier's Weight chart against itself with a monster quite like this. Being in chart land offers oppertunities to simply disregard Dear Uncle Sam, Or Monsuier Quack Scale Or Homb're Wally Peso. (He he he...)

Very common in the oil patch, concrete delivery, picker/crane trucks, etc. You will see twin steer bed trucks in the oil patch and crane trucks pulling a float or scissor neck (fixed fifth wheel), but as a matter of course they are not for semis--you couldn't load the steer axles enough to justify the cost and weight penalties.

    I used to operate this...

Put 5th wheel into middle of chassis behind aft steer axle.

Build operator cab into the forward portion of the trailer hooked onto the 5th wheel, let the engine etc figure itself out in other engineering.

Truck engine runs pump and hydraulics via A-box when stationary. It was a similar setup for twin cementers (two pumps, two 8v71/92s). Due to the increasing weight and complexity, all manufacturers went to trailer mounted equipment so the tractor is transportation only; therefore, twin steer not required.
