So I had the dumb idea earlier today to look up 200cc diesel engines. I previously have looked up "small diesel generators" and got nothing. I found that 200cc and under diesel engines can be had on amazon for fairly cheaply though from chinese manufacturers. Now I was looking these up to possibly set up a diy genset to run AC in the truck at night and use diesel rather than carry gasoline as well.
Looking up some info I found that a 200a alternator should only take about 3hp to run and the link at the amazon store below has an engine that's 5hp for $386.
Futchoy
I figure if someone really wanted to run their ac at night with a cheap generator you could probably buy one of these, slap a 200a alternator to some homemade belt setup and have a diesel generator for less than $750. Now personally I'd want to slap a big ####ing muffler and resonator on the engine as well. Aside from that though does anyone think this would or wouldn't work?

I dont pinch pennies to the point where I cant idle the truck.

If it's not liquid cooled, it might be hard to mount it where it can get enough air flow.

Then California would require a emissions on it. The smart way today is an electric APU with a couple extra batteries to run them.

IMHO a 200 amp alternator is overkill, I have a 12kw generator on my truck with 4cyl Kubota diesel and it has a 30 amp alternator which charges all my batteries in an hour, while running my RV style roof air

Go on ebay and you can buy those 3 hp air cooled Diesels all day long for under 300 bucks .
Downsides are they are noisy, made in China and smokey when under a load .
They are getting popular for repowering small engine gas powered equipment , I don't know about the longevity of them but so far they are getting good reviews and I'm going repower my snowblower with one this fall .Oxbow Thanks this.
