Actually you probably were. Speed equals to more accidents. It's been proven. It takes longer to stop, your reaction times aren't as fast because your traveling faster. It's science. It's fact. A object moving faster takes longer to slow down. And just because that sign on the side says to do 80 doesn't mean that it's a safe speed.

"And just because that sign on the side says to do 80 doesn't mean that it's a safe speed."

And when operating on a roadway w/ a speed limit of 75 or 80 mph, with the vast majority of the traffic doing those speeds and more, it's far more dangerous to plug along at 55!

All it takes is 15 mph difference in speed and rear end collisions happen more. It is hard for most people to judge distance beyond 500 feet. And when that distance is closing at a rate of 15 mph at highway speeds, causes more rear end accidents. It's better to have everyone moving along at roughly the same speed.

So people can't look ahead and go oh I'm gaining on him I should get over cause he's obviously moving slower than I am.

You just proved my point. Thank you.

Because no one expects some dolt to be dawdling along with their head and posterior in close proximity! They get surprised by their rate of close. This causes heavy braking or rapid lane changes taking other drivers by surprise as well. None of this is good, especially when involving heavy vehicles. Often, the accidents these idiots cause are behind them, and the real cause for these incidents just continues toodling along, blithely unaware of the carnage in their wake. It's for the same reasons that many freeways / tollways have minimum speed limits as well as maximum speeds. The problem is that while many of the maximum speeds have been raised, the minimums remain as they were before the maximums went up. It's for the same reasons that many areas require trucks to use 4 way flashers if their speeds drop to 50 mph on hills ... and 55 on flat ground is less anticipated by other drivers than the common sense and common knowledge fact that trucks slow down when climbing hills. In most areas there are 2 lane highways essentially paralleling freeways and toll roads. If you want to dawdle along, fine, use those roads. Don't mess up the flow of traffic that has somewhere to go and something to do that shouldn't necessitate navigating rolling road blocks or octagenarians driving motor homes the size of Greyhounds that they shouldn't be herding down any road, let alone operating them in traffic at 2/3 the speeds of the rest of the traffic Off rant...

So what your saying is people can't handle driving at high rates of speed without causing accidents.

Not at all. I'm saying that many accidents are caused by unexpected circumstances, and that among those unexpected happenings are fools too obtuse to realize that they are the problem! So far, in the however many million accident-free miles I've driven in heavy trucks over the past 40+ years, I've always been able to avoid these types of incidents either by luck, skill, or just good fortune. I have however, sometimes been tempted to hit the throttle instead of the brake and remove that particular fool from the gene pool --- thus preventing them from causing any such further incidents..

So I don't understand how them going slower caused you to have an accident. They are traveling at a decent speed, in control of their vehicle, in their lane. How does that cause you to have an accident?
Oh because you couldn't see ahead far enough and by your own admission can't judge speeds, so I ask how is any of that the other guys fault?
Maybe if you were going slower you would of seen him and been able to change lanes ahead of time.
