In all my years I’ve never heard a cdl driver describe OTR work as “long haul”. It’s usually non drivers who use that term. Shrugs.

I dont see how, many drivers stop for a break for various reasons. I think if it wasn't mandated then drivers wouldn't have a problem with it. They hate being told what to do so to speak

If I recall correctly, they added the 30 minute break requirement at the same time they added an hour to available driving time, so really, we ended up with a better deal. I usually need a bathroom break after 5 or so hours on the road, anyway.

If Ive been out a while, there is a mess of places hither thither and yon. Even in the middle of NYC I'll take 7 meters and pay a gal on the walk a 30 to keep the parasites off me. Feed meters as needed with a bag of quarters. No problems.

Spec'ally if there is pizza or hoagies to eat while waiting.

The biggest problem with the 30 minute break is, if you're running at night, where are you supposed to take it if the truck stops and rest areas are full? Oh, I know. The fuel island.

    Cabinover101 and Timin770 Thank this.

In the LTL business we work for a living so we don’t stop. The only ones that do are looking for excuses to milk the clock.

    Indeed.

I spent some time not stopping.

I did not understand then how it was so easy just to work until the day is gone and keep going with paper in the bunk. Sort that out later. In my later years paperwork was exceeding 2 hours daily.

Doesn't wash. Go 'on duty/post trip' as soon as you stop at that light and then idle to a parking spot. Yep, you're going to be unpopular, but you'll be legal. Even with the new ELD, you can move at 4.5mph without going to drive line. I've changed parking spots, moved from parking to the fuel island before going 'on duty/ pretrip-fuel', drop and hook from one end of the yard to the other... all sorts of moves while preserving what little time I can on my 70hr clock.
