Something that may be worth doing if your unsure of how to use paper and to ensure if this happens again its easy to use. Is just run a paperlog alongside your ELD for a few weeks. Obviously dont turn it in. But it would give you a feeling for the whole process and has helped a couple of my trainees out. And if you make a mistake you have the ELD to fall back on to see what you did wrong.

    Just curious.

Would the last 7 days plus current day log be needed in paper form it the ELD completely failed and couldn’t provide them?

I’m under the impression 8 days paper are needed..

He’s right… it is on me. I am the driver and I should know this stuff before I even put the key in the ignition. I forgot about the instruction manual in the driver’s door. I should be more responsible than I have been. This morning was one of my worst mornings yet. I had to have IT reprogram the truck and tablet. That took 3 hours… and I still got in 572 miles today. I ran my 11hr clock down to almost 20 seconds.

My tablet has everything on it, it just wouldn’t link to the truck for some reason- but, it still shows everything. I’d rather just run with the paper logs and put that tablet in a river!

That tablet got everything. It didn’t lose not even a minute. I think it’s possessed.

Powering down both the logging device and the truck for a few minutes and then booting everything back up might fix the issue.
And by powering down the truck I mean hitting the battery kill switch so everything re-initializes when it turns back on.
    Tablet off.
Truck off and close the kill switch.
Wait at least 5 minutes, then turn the switch back to on and start the truck.
Wait a couple more minutes and then power on the tablet.

Everything is computer controlled, and every now and then (just like your home computer) it needs a reboot.

The IT guy changed some parameters with the truck and then had me turn off the kill switch. He also did something to my tablet too. It seems to have fixed it, the truck now runs a lot smoother too. I noticed today that the truck pulls a lot harder up hills than it did before. My truck and trailer weigh in at 76,600.

You know what the explicit company instructions are? Call IT first, and if they can't get it working then talk with regulatory before starting paper logs. Regulatory will email the driver's last 8 days and give the OK to start paper logging from the moment the eld failed.

So he did do what he was told to, it just happened at the time when staffing levels are low and are about to change shift.

No, you do not need them in paper form. Having a pdf is just fine. It's also legally acceptable to have your company send the ERODS over directly, however that falls into the same category as drinking a NA beer while driving past a DUI check point - legal but I wouldn't do it.
