I'm a retired military tactical ground mobility guy working with a consulting company looking at commercial applications for a heavy lift/jack system originally developed for armored vehicles. I figured there might be a place for it in the OTR trucking industry, but I figured I'd ask y'all before running down any rabbit holes and trying to give folks something they never needed in the first place. Appreciate any constructive feedback or recommendations.
- How often are folks blowing tires and how long are the repairs taking?
- Do you change it yourself or call a roadside service?
- If you change the tire yourself, what kind of jack are you using and how long does it take to finish and get rolling?
- How much does it end up costing you in time/mileage/money (not including the cost of the wheel/tire)?
- What would be the fastest, safest, and most cost-effective solution?
- Would it be worthwhile to have your truck equipped with a heavy duty, weight-rated, rechargeable electric jack that would safely lift your truck in seconds?

The answer to this is a rabbit hole for sure. There are a million of us doing a million kinds of trucking. Company guys and big carriers are never going to spring for this. Way too much liability and they apparently like to hire the inept who can't even change a tire on their own cars if they even own one.
Owner operators are where there is a market for this if any so you might want to move your post there.......but......we have air on board so an air jack makes the most sense but not many of us are going to the trouble to carry it plus the necessary tools just to put our necks out there on the side of the highway full of texting drivers to try and change a flat. That's what roadside services overcharge us for. Their network is already in place and they accept the liability. Sad but true. I hate it for them. I give them all the room I can and then some and still many die every year.
I do all the repairs I can on my truck but fooling with tires is not one I'm remotely interested in doing. Leave this to the guys that do them all day every day.
Good luck with your idea. Sadly, I don't think it would do very well.blairandgretchen Thanks this. -
I’d guess that 97% of the members on here call road services.
And - read some other posts in the forum and you’ll quickly figure a lot of us are struggling to stay in business, no expendable income left.86scotty Thanks this. -
I want one !

I'm not sure you can afford one. You need to sell truck and trailer plus sign home equity loan. Look how much is difference in price for let say flashlight. Words MILITARY GRADE ALUMINUM will add $100 to same chinisium garbage.

Military air lifting bags is what i'm looking for. Compact, light weight, durable.

I have been out here over 9 years. In that time I have had maybe 12-15 tires blow out and required changing on the road.
Less than 2 per year.
I think the cost of keeping equipment in the truck, not to mention the space required for it, is not worth the effort.Snailexpress Thanks this. -
