I would also ask to see feet to check for potential flip flop usage.

Orientation should include a luggage check. If contents are more than 50% sweat pants and open toed shoes, employee should get a greyhound ticket home

I spent a year unemployed before starting my driving career. However, I had 8 years with NCR before that, and was laid off because NCR shipped my job to Serbia.

I took unemployment for 2 months, and lived on severance and savings after that.

I didn't hide anything, and had no problems getting hired by Stevens Transport, then, after a bit more than a year, moved to Shaffer / Crete.

At the time you were at Stevens Transport, how did you like driving for them?

Currently, how do you like driving for Shaffer / Crete?

I had trouble with this because I stopped working to try college. I did eventually get work, but even Roehl said I had to many employment gaps.

Stevens is a very good place to learn, but they will try very hard to get you to lease, which, IMHO, is a stupid idea for any driver with less than a year of experience. Company drivers get to drive pretty nice trucks, and the Stevens support network of people that can assist you if you are willing to ask for help is very nice - you WILL have questions that you never expected once you get on the road solo. They also track weather for you. The biggest downside for me was low pay. With 1 year, I was getting paid 31 cpm, zip code miles.

With Shaffer, I am getting 49 cpm, practical miles. But my truck is less nice and they don't have the support mechanisms for new drivers (since I am not a new driver, this isn't a big issue for me, obviously.)

TLDR: Stevens is a good place to learn to drive as a new company driver, and Shaffer is a good place to make money as an experienced company driver.

I had about 8 months of no employment before going and getting my cdl. Now, it was entirely on purpose, I had taken some of my savings and blew it traveling. However, some trucking companies with a stick up their ### (TMC) told me that made me unhireable.

It was a good lesson. I learned that I need to screen companies just as much as they want to screen potential employees. I can only imagine how miserable it would have been to work in that kind of environment.

Anyway. I've been drinking and just telling a story. But feel free to find something in there that might be worth knowing
