Ther is no possible way he was starting in 4th gear unless he was slipping the clutch alot.

This entire thread has been nothing but an it's not fair whine fest. I failed my first road test. Had only driven 13 speeds with CAT motors. For the test the boss threw me in with another driver and had him take me to the dmv. This truck was a detroit and 10 speed that I had no idea about. Failed because I could not shift that stupid thing but I never stalled it.

I once fumbled a basic 10 speed in front of my father bobtailing to get the trailer. He had provided transport to the motel to repossess the truck from a very sick driver who was essentially off the road pernamently that day. So I was assigned his truck.

A bit embarrassing but it all worked out that day. Speed limit was 50 on that US 1 but crawled along at 30 or so fighting that low to high range shift across the stupid box. ha.

First manual i drove was an 18 speed. I was 12. Made it 3 metres before it stalled. Old man yelled at me. Yelled wtf i did wrong and told me to do it again...

"Born to drive" ? No learned to love to drive but had a natural knack for it ;) i bet you still made mistakes like the rest of us.

who the hell took a dump in your coffee? Sheesh

i did when driving road trains. But empty was still 90T lol

When loaded had to engage the Tri drive and split the diff. You wanna talk about nerves do that for the first time on a road test.... The best piece of advice i could give the OP. You can drive yes or no? If yes. No matter what box it is. Work out where the gears are BEFORE YOU EVEN START THE TRUCK. Then drive it accordingly...

Today, [for other than Volvos] the 18 is the go-to standard option for speculation sale trucks to be sold off the showroom lot. The 13 has largely been swapped out for the 18 over the past 10 years for spec and owner-operator trucks. They're ideal especially for the western state 105k haulers.

Why some 48 state fleets still order with 10 speeds is a mystery to me. Weight maybe?
