Don't fret...like @racemaxx24 said, most companies today use 10's. Some straight 10's and some super 10's. And automated are becoming more popular.
When I was 1st learning to drive a truck, the company I was working for stuck me in an old Ford 9000 with a Cummins and a 9 speed. Having never touched a semi, I was completely lost by it. The whole floating and matching rpms was a complete mystery (only having driven manual transmissions in gas vehicles). Maybe it was the guy they had teaching me, he was within a few years of retirement and had been driving since he could see over the steering wheel, so it was tough for him to recall what it was like when he was 1st learning to drive a truck. It wasn't until we had to drive an old Mack 5 speed from the 80's while his truck was in for service. That's when I started understanding what he was talking about. By the end of the day, I was shifting like a truck driver because those old transmissions wouldn't let you force a shift...it made you learn patience and timing. After that, pretty much any transmission within a short amount of time...but even experienced drivers jumping into a totally different vehicle takes a little transition time to be as smooth as they were in their previous truck.
Failed road test... 18 speed wtf?
